| been wanting a taurus pt1911 in SS but was looking at the charles daly site today and really like the empire EFS SS,same price, one built in brazil, one in the philippines, looking for opinions and comments. |

FWIW, my comment is this... Taurus has made a product that people have been happy with thus far/early on (whether that remains is yet to be seen, but that's not the issue at hand). Since the demand for Taurus 1911s has risen dramatically they have priced themselves out of the market (for those with any sense). You can bet that the SS version will be market price of the standard PLUS the SS difference (and if these are hard to come by the cost difference will be significantly higher). Unless you are getting the weapon for a comparable price to a RIA, Armscor, etc., it's a foolish purchase, plain and simple. |

I have a CD, stainless steel full length, about 7 years old-it took a gunsmith to take care of the hammer falling to half-cock notch problem to fix it up--but since he fixed it, it has run just fine, and is accurate. As I understood it, triggers and sears were a CD problem. But it is nowhere near as nice as my Remington Rand M1911A1 |
have you ever actually owned one? i have owned 4 over the years and ALL of them have been solid handguns. sure they are not high end guns but they are certainly on par with any other quality mid range firearm. |
Yea i sure have.... Had a mdl 92 variant around 1991 that blew up on me after about 2-5k rnds (i didn't really keep track of how many rnds back then so i'm not positive) ..... When they came out with the little 5 shot 357 ported beleive it was a 635 i gave them another try sometimes it would shoot fine sometime it would unlock the cylinder and partially open rendering it useless till you closed the cylinder.... and last but not least last yr i wanted a little snubby 22 rvlvr so i bought a mdl94 it came from the factory out of time and blows lead back in your face when you shoot it .... i've been punishing myself for being stupid enuff to get burned this last time and it's sitting in the safe i haven't sent it back yet (all 3 pistols i purchased NIB) I've been buying, selling, trading, collecting guns for 26~yrs and i've owned everything from an rg to a wilson combat .... i'm not a gun snob and don't drink coolaid i just relay my opinion based on my experience. Have i had other guns break or malfunction yep sure have but nothing on par with taurus... and 99% of them were well used not new guns. |
1991... ahhh there is the problem. their QC has gone up a good bit in the last 5-6 years. did you try contacting them to ave them repaired? mine have ben solid out of the box. i used the warranty once on a 357 i bought used that was pretty well shot out. they replaced it. while they certainly aren't on par with high end guns i still believe them to be a decent gun for the money. their 1911 has gotten nothing but good reviews and are holding up VERY well. |
| My father has a Charles Daly 1911. Bought it new, has never done any work on it. Runs like a champ, finish is great and it's quite accurate. I love shooting it and wouldn't feel bad about owning one either. I have no experience with Taurus so I can't comment, but are they really selling the once $500 1911 for $800? Where is that price coming from? |

Allow me to jump on the CD bashing Band Wagon. I purchased one and it was shit out of the box. It would not feed the round from the magazine if it were loaded to capacity. When the slide went forward the round would turn down jamming into the feed ramp not allowing the slide any more forward movement. It wasn't the mags because they worked in my Norinco, a buddy's Remington-Rand and anothe buddy's Colt. After I re-angled the feed ramp, throated the barrell and filed down the slide stop it runs fine and is actually one of my favorite pistols to shoot. That kind of work should not have to be done on any new gun. Also, the slide is not interchangable with other 1911's. So, if you want a project gun go ahead and pick up the CD. You may even get lucky and it will run fine w/o any work. Otherwise buy the Taurus. |
| I find this topic to be funny to say the least. A large part of the humor is from the repitition of history when it comes to the "loaded 1911 on a budget" made by a less known gun company. When the charles daily 1911 in their full featured presence burst onto the scene, there were reports of the amazing quality for a bargain. I heard all about how they were accurate and reliable at a fraction of the cost of "other" manufactures. Sound familiar? It should be as Taurus has a similar spell going right this minute. I have handled several of Taurus's 1911s and have owned several of their guns and still own a few that I am happy with. If you want a 1911 that will stand a better chance of giving you no problems and being a good solid gun, buy a quality unit by a company with a decent rep and record for building quality 1911s. You dont get somethin for nothin. |
actually many of us poo poo'd the cd when it came out as well after actually looking at them. i am betting the taurus 1911 will be a different story assuming the mim parts hold together. |
I'm not trying to trash this thread or cause trouble just giving my opinion of a company i've had bad luck with over the last 15~yrs.....People want to buy one for a plinking gun probably not a bad idea they will fix it if or should i say when it breaks but i wouldn't recomend trusting your life to it .... |
no sweat i feel the same way about glocks. thats why there are TONS of different companies to buy from. |
