| A local shop has a used Springfield GI compact listed at $399. It comes with 2 mags and the case. It looks real good with no marks or dings on it. Is this price worth it? |

Yes, no, Maybe. First off, the sights on the pistol are all wrong. You will need a .160 front, and a .375 rear to get the right POA for standard ammo. Figure into the base price that the slide will need to be cut for Novak sights. Next the pistol is parkerized, so it has a good base to coat. Compact pistols can be a bit finicky, so plan on having to tweak it a bit to get it to run, and since it has a shorter barrel, ammo selection becomes really important. Simple fact is the pistol tends to need hotter loads to run right, but since the barrels are shorter, the hotter load needs to be with faster burning power. Bottom line is if you are looking for a compact builder, it's a OK price, but if your looking for something that will run out of the box, the either an SA ultra, or Colt is the better choice if you are looking for short barreled 1911. |
