| I am going to be purchasing a Loaded SA PX9152L to carry concealed. I also plan to purchase a Milt Sparks Versamax 2 holster. Any of you guys have a setup similar to this? I don't know whether to get the cowhide or horsehide? Any suggestions? On the gun I plan to change grips, and have the frontstrap and mainspring housing checkered. Anything else I should consider modifying for carry? |

Defintely go with a Wilson Bulletproof extractor. The Extractor claw is beefier and the whole piece is very well made. Do some research and ask a few questions on extractor fitting and you'll be good to go. It isn't a hrd process but a few tips and tricks help the process along. Also, switch to 18.5 lb recoil springs by Wolff. They soak up a lot more recoil than the 16 or 17 pounders that are on guns these days and also make your gun much snappier. |
| I roll with the VMII (also the Cow & Horse hide combo) and one of these Belt |
No reason to change the extracter on a SA. If in the first 500rds it fails then do so. You can change to an 18.5lb spring if your shooting a lot of SD ammo. If your shooting mainly ball ammo there is no need to change from stock. Heavier springs do not soak up recoil they actually increase the felt recoil. Seems opposite but it is true. Lastly, you may or may not want to checker the front strap. On a carry gun you run the chance of rubbing yourself raw or snagging clothing with lots of checkering. My carry guns are checkered and I could take it or leave it. Oh ya, go with the Milt Sparks belt. They match the VMII and the belt loops fit together well. |
Without getting too far off topic here. The heavier recoil spring DOES soak up more recoil BUT it DOES make the gun SNAPPIER, hence a perceived sense of more recoil. To get a feel for this wierd phenomenon take out your favorite 1911 and have a 16 and an 18.5 pound recoil spring on hand. You'll notice a TON less muzzle flip with the 18.5 pound spring BUT you'll notice also that the gun operates REALLY fast....it's a bizzare sensation but, in my opinion, allows for much faster follow up shots. As far as extractors, I toss the extractors on both Colt and Springfield. The tougher build and larger claw of the Bulletproof are totally worth it. Personally, I do NOT trust the innards on Springfields. My own experience has been less than stellar. I'd also change out the slide stop for a Wilson B.Proof while I was at it. It's a good stop. Another important thing to check is the plunger tube on the 1911....I have been stunned at how many ( from just about everybody not in the custom biz ) are loose from the factory. You name it, Colt, Springfield, etc. |
I was wondering about the checkering. The main reason I was going to have it done, is because I planned on putting smooth grips on. Would I be better off with textured? I just don't want to end up with something that is uncomfortable to wear. I guess the other stuff I'll have to wait to shoot the gun to really see what fine tuning it needs. This is going to be my first 1911 purchase. I'm really excited about it. Thanks for all the responses guys. |
