I have owned a number of 1911s and now just want a basic not too nicely finished combat commander 1911. Plain finish and no extra frills just a basic reliable 1911. Anybody with experience on the 1991A1 series. Comments?

I've owned a few of them and loved em all!  Would have could have should have. . . I miss them all now!
The last time i looked in EE they were commanding a premium, and the people who do own them right now aren't parting with them

I would almost be willing to trade my stainless 1911 for a like-new 1991 because i like them THAT much.
If you do end up getting one, please share pics of it here

Merry Christmas

Yep - - - got one . . .

Well. . . I mean two  ! !  One is the standard Gov't model and one is the Commander.  Both the 1991A1 series.

What's not to like about them ?!?!?  Good old tried-and-true basic 45.  Both of mine have been 100% reliable in over 1,000 rounds each.  And I use only Wilson mags -- that may help a bit.

Carried my Commader for a while as my CCW.  About a year ago I purchsed a S&W 1911 PD.  About six ounces lighter than the steel frame Commander.   Now carry the S&W, but still shoot the Commander every now and then . . . .

What kind of premium? One of my local stores has two blued ones on the shelf for $750.

I personally like the 1991 line. The guts are the same as the high end models, all that was really changed was the finish. Toss on some nice grips, a trigger, and do a bit of stoning and you are all set.

Have 1991 Compact. No complaints here for the most part. It was a little finicky mag wise but a few Wilson's fixed that. It needs a new slide stop/release now as it someimes wont stay back after the last round.

Huh? Blued? When I bought my1991A1 in '92. they were all black parkerized. That finish, BTW, has been tough as nails. I've shot and carried the heck out of mine in the past 14 years and the finish is just now wearing through on the edges. The front sight blade is getting a little light, too. As far as I'm concerned, it's just now showing a little character that distinguishes it from all of those new black Kimbers...

Cheers!

Probably not actually blued, but not parkerized either.

The new Colt 1991's are blued, it's a decent dark blue too.  They are going in the $700 range, $750 is not outrageous but you can get a better deal if you look around.

The 1991 is actually very nicely finished.. the ORM is a very nice matte blue. The new ones have matte blue rounds and polished flats. Only the very early 1991's were parked and I seem to remember reading that the early parkerized finish was thin and didn't wear good..

Best production 1911 out there in my humble opinion..
