| I'm looking for hardball pistol recommendations, either complete pistol, or a conversion on one of my 1911s. |
| The only options for an out of the box ball gun is either Baer or RRA. Both build 1911's that they guarantee will hold 3" at 50 yards. I have to stress again that everyone else says they will build you an accurate pistol, but only Baer and RRA guarantee it. If you want to have one of your pistols upgraded, remember that in order to shoot CMP leg matches the pistol must be in USGI configuration. That means no external modifications that aren't on the original as issued pistol. The only external change is you can have an adjustable rear sight. I have a pistol that I use as a wad gun for bullseye. It already had a good trigger and adjustable sights, so all I had done was a barrel swap. I paid $650 for the pistol, and about $250 for the barrel work. For around $900 I have a pistol that will hold the '10' ring all day long. |
Apparently you weren't listening. 1" at 25 yards dosen't mean squat at 50 yards. To shoot bullseye you have to be able to hold a 3" group at 50 yards or you won't be competitive. Not only that, but Wilson dosen't make a CMP legal ball gun.

| I've looked at the Les Baer and RRA offerings. The big downside is the wait, as no one seems to stock them. Also, since I've already got an unmodified pistol that's reasonably right and tight, a conversion looks pretty attractive. I'd still have a wait, but far less additional out of pocket. Does Clark Custom still have a good reputation for hardball guns? |

As others said, Rock River and Les Baer are the only out of the box hardball guns. The other option is to have one built, but if you don't already have one to build on, it will likely cost more to do than just buying a RR or LB. No matter what option is chosen, it will likely take several months to get a RR or LB or have a custom gun built. Check Champion's Choice for the Les Baer; they sometimes have one or two available and at a fair price. Don't waste too much time or energy trying to decide on which one, the RR or LB is "better". They are virtually identical. Find the best price and availability. Also, even those these are hardball guns, they (the RR or LB) will still shoot wad cutters as good as anything else, but sometimes a lighter spring might need to be installed for ligher loads. |
Isn't 1" at 25 yards equivalent to 2" at 50 yards, sort of like 1 MOA is 1" at 100 yards, 2" at 200 yards, 3" at 300 yards, etc? |
If you extrapolate the equation then yes, 1" at 25 yards should equal 2" at 50 yards. The problem is that the extra level of work that is needed to hold 2" at 50 yards just isn't performed on most pistols. I have some pistols that will hold good groups at 25 yards and open up by a factor of four if I try them out at 50 yards. Something else I've noticed is that just about any factory FMJ will group well at 25 yards, even Wolf. Move back to 50 yards and that same factory ball sometimes won't hold the black. Like any shooting sport, bullseys has it's own specific equipment requirements. Most manufacturers just don't make their guns accurate enough because they don't sell many of them to the general public.
