New to the sight...I currently use Wilson combat 8-rd mags in my 1911.  I am looking for surplus type mags, without giving up reliability.  Something I can buy alot of, to keep aroung the house.  Any suggestions?

well, the Novacs, CMCs, and factory (springfield, kimber, etc) mags are very reliable, but they are ~$15-$20--only a little cheaper than WCs

check out CDNN investments and midwayusa for the best prices for these mags

some USGI surplus and imports are ok for the money (most run ~$5 a mag--sportsmansguide.com), but i wouldnt trust em out side range time

stay away from the ones made by promag and usa and tripple k

Beware of cheap mags

That being said I bought some cheapie Colt Reproduction mags from SG  www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=70824

These are thinner metal than my factory Colt mags and SG sent me 8 rounders rather than 7. They actually are holding up well at the range, some have been loaded and shot 15 times or more.  If they last they'll be good range mags.  A couple of them dont hold the slide back on the last shot.

I'd much rather have reliability than save a few bucks.  How do those from ammoman function?  Are they all 7 rders?

I would stick with the 7rd Metalform mags with round or flat followers.  You can get them at Brownells reasonably cheap.  It's not worth saving a few bucks on suspect GI mags and having the above happen.

I've had zero problems with Wilson or SAI factory magazines.

Metalform is a company that tends to make a lot of magazines for the gun manufacturers.

They offer several types of magazines with different followers and what not available.

If you find their website you will see that they offer discounts if you buy large quantities of magazines.

I am currently getting quality high end mags for ccw use.  Once I figure out how many of these I want I plan to track down some metal form mags to try out.

If I find some that work well in my 1911s I plan to just order a whole lot at once to get a price break.

From reading I have done on all other available lower priced mags I just don't feel comfortable trying to rely on anything other than metalform.

And even with that, I am going to try a couple metal form mags out before I order a mess of mags from them.

I have been shooting Chip Mckormic 8 rd. mags with base pads that I get for $10. They always work and IMHO they are MY goto mag.

Years ago I was wanting to do exactly what you’re doing now.

Gave up though, couldn’t find anything as reliable as the Wilson Combat mags.

I shoot with guys that use CM and Novak mags now and they seem to work fine, but I’ve already got a pile of the Wilson 8-round mags, they're perfect, no need for anything else.

I had a finnicky 1911 that gave my problems will all types of magazines in the past.  Finally, after trying Chip McCormick, GI, and Kimber, I tried magazines from King's Gunworks in Glendale, CA (also online).  They worked and worked well.  They are $25 for stainless, but I can't remember pricing on blued.  Last time I was in there, they said the LAPD chose their magazines for SWAT use.  That says a lot.
