Well i went home this weekend and my mom asked me what i wanted for Christmas... i gave her a list of about 5 guns and ammo.  She said pick one, i'll give you $400.

So here i am, $400 plus another 4-500 from my end.  So my question is this, what is the best out of the box 1911 for $8-900.   Best out of the box or one to buy then fix up for that price.

Thanks

BTW i know little to nothing about 1911's

It's all about personal preference and features you want. I just plunked my $850 down on a Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail. I am very happy with it, but it may not be for you. I was skeptical about Dan Wesson, but they are using good parts, and the fit and finish is outstanding. There are a whole bunch of choices in the price range you're in. What do you plan to do with it?

Here is a link to the Commander Bobtail:

I'll mainly be using it for fun.  But i'd like it to be as accurate as it could be. I'm not big on the SS ones, for some reason the parkerized looks better to me.

The only thing holding me back from getting one before was cost of ammo, but i'm over that now.

ETA: the only size one's i like are the 5"

I just don't know what brand is the best for my price range, if i spend $900 on a SA would it be the same as a Kimber in that price range?

I like The new Taurus.  they can be had for around $450 - $500.  Another $150 for Trigger parts and $200 for a barrel and fit job.  Thats $850 or $650 if you keep the stock barrel.  From what I have seen they are good shooters out of the box (just heavy trigger pull).

1)  I do not like a Taurus at all...  I would never trust anything by them REGARDLESS of what I think

    a)  Buying a gun this first year someone starts making it is kinda like buying a car the first year its been out.
    b)  Taurus is not know for high quality overall, they make good cheap guns, he has budget to buy something which will be a better all around gun
    c)  He said he wanted something out of the box...  He can spend all of that money and it will still not be as good as a nice S/A, it will never have the resale value of a S/A and the smiths who will work on them are limited.

I now own a Colt, a remington, and a Springfield Inc.

the Remington is WW2  (I beleive) the Colt is WW1, and the Springfield is new, of them I prefer the Springfield, the shorter trigger and extended grip safety make a big difference, But I do like the flat mainspring housing on my Colt....

handle some different pistols, if you can, shoot them.

I would love to have a Dan Wesson, and will never touch a Para Ordinance, even though they are easier to get for me

Get a decent Springfield Armory 1911, and spend the rest on ammo.

I'm amazed that your mom would agree to buy you a gun for Christmas. Mine sure wouldn't have done that (I wasn't raised in a gun family). Secondly I'm surprised to hear a mother spends $400 on a Christmas present for a presumedly grown son. When I was old enough to own a handgun I was buying my parents nice presents, not the other way around. Oh well, I guess every family is different. I'm not making any judgements, it's just that the scene stuck me as unusual.

Anyway, if you know little to nothing about 1911 pistols what makes you a.) willing to spend $400 of your mom's money on one; and b.) willing to drop another $500 of your own money on something you don't know anything about?

How are  you going to use it? Target shooting? Concealed carry? Safe queen?

Also, I'm curious, what were the other choices?

To get a "decent" S/A you're looking at at least $1500.  You're math is a little Jookie!

Decent = loaded
Above average = TRP
Perfection = PRO

Well first of all my mom is a very nice person...she always gets us good gifts on Bdays and Christmas.  But this year she asked what i wanted and after i told her guns/ammo she just said i'll JUST give you money.

The two i am looking at are the XD's and 1911 but i'm still not sure if i should go 9mm/.45.  I have alot of ammo for 9mm's but i have non for .45's.    I would like this gun to be very accurate and that's when i came up the 1911.  I have shot one before but that was before i was realy into guns, So i don't remember how it shot, etc....

Target shooting mainly... that's why i want the 9mm b/c of lower ammo costs.

Maybe not the TRP or Pro, but you can pick up a decent S/A all day long for under $1K, and with a little shoppnig around even under 8 - 900

not a problem, unless you live in Cali .......... thats your fault , not theirs

I have a loaded SA Parked and it never had a problem.  I keep thinking of getting upgrades, but then I think how well the pistol has done without any.  And you can get one for around $700 is you look around.

I've got an older Kimber CDPll with internal (the way g-d intended it) extracter. For fit and finish i'd look at the S&W. they look damn good to me. If you do get a used kimber make sure it has an internal extracter. I think the external ones are all being recalled.

Handled, but did not shoot, a SIG 1911. Seemed to be put together really well. Looks a little different from the standard 1911 pattern. I think the local fun shop had it for $ 795 NIB for the stainless model.

FWIW: I have a Springfield MilSpec with almost 1000 rounds through it. Going to do some minor mods and maybe fit a match barrel if I can decide which one to get. Damn Brownells catalog. Too many choices.

I don't own one, but I have heard nothing but great things about the S&W 1911's.

Otherwise - it's hard to go wrong with a SA GI.45 or Mil-Spec.

I'd buy one of those before I flushed my money down the toilet for a Taurus or RIA...or a Sig or a Kimber either for that matter.

Gonna have to go with the general response here for SA.  I bought a Springfield Target in SS a couple years ago for under 8 bills out the door and it's been a wonderful shooter.
