I'm wondering if there are any commander size 1911s with Rails around? Or even a custom job...maybe a warrior w/ a Commander Slide/Barrel ? Thanks! |

I am having one built as we speak. Caspian Commander frame (they build them with a rail) Take a look at their site to see them and get one built up! This is being built for fall OWB carry when I have a cover garmet on. I am going to have to find someone to make a custom Kydex holster I think as I want it to always have the light attached. This is being built for carrying when doing things like walking my dog in the sub at nights where I want to OWB for ease of putting on and off but still having it covered (a full size is just too big for me when carrying like this, dont get me wrong I love the full sized rail 1911, I have a S/A loaded operator which is my oh sh*t carry gun hands down! with the M6X light/laser on it) |
STI's Duty CT uses a full-sized frame, if I'm not mistaken. I know the Ranger II uses a Gov't frame and shortened slide. And it's got a bull barrel. I'm not sure what this thread's starter is actually looking for but assume that he's after a 4.25" gun with a bushing. |
If there's a rail on it what's the difference between a Gov't and Commander frame?
|
Traditional commander length is 4.25", although I'm seeing more and more 4" barrels. Government model (full size) is 5". I favor the 5" and only own 5" 1911s, but I wouldn't mind a commander. |

Govt. size 1911 (the standard 1911 such as a warrior) is a 5" Commanders are 4.25 in. Kimber and other companies make 4" 1911's which are midsize or compacts but not true commanders. If you want a commander with a rail your option are; add a rail to an existing Commander (Dawson rail?) have a custom build off a Caspian frame as they offer a Commander frmae made with a rail |
Yup, you've got it. There's lot of variations, the three "standards" are the Government, Commander, and Officer's. In short, the Government Model is a full size frame 5" bbl, the Commander is a full size frame 4.25" bbl, and the Officers is a compact frame 3.5" bbl. Of course there have been many variations on this, such as the Colt CCO with a compact frame and a Commander slide "Commanders" made by several companies today have a 4" bbl instead of a 4.25". The dust cover length (the frame extension forward of the trigger guard) is longer on the Gov't frame, and I think the frame rails are slightly shorter on the Colt Commander. Of course with the rail the dust cover isn't much of an issue, and best I can remember you can run a Commander length slide on a Gov't frame, though it will look "off" due to the radius at the front of the slide not matching the dust cover. I seem to recall the first railed commander I saw was built on a Caspian Gov't frame. |
Thanks for the info, that clears alot of info up for me! Why doesn't anyone make a Commander size gun with a Rail? Glockhappy, what size Kimber is that? |
|
Kimber is 4 in I myself do not trust anything to run tough under 4.25 BUT lots love the Kimbers and have had very good luck with them. No one has made a Commander with rail as their is not a huge demand for them. Most people buy a commander for IWB carry and you arent going to carry a gun with a light IWB Caspian knows there is some market as they have Commander frames with a rail as part of it. That is what I am using to build my dog walker 1911... A Custom 1911 with a paddle holster so I can easily put it on when taking the dog for a walk. It will have a Surefire light attached and CT Laser grips. I am going the commander sized as OWB it will be easier to conceal with a light jacket or even a sweatshirt. I mostly walk my dog at night hence the desire for a attached light and the CT Laser grips. I have too much time on my hands obviously if I am dedicating the time and funds to a custom build simply for walking my dog hahahaha Hey, I am a 1911 addict and I am proud! |
