I have a Kimber Pro Carry that I have been having reliabilty problems with. I took it to a local smith, but after dumping about $200 in parts and labor into it, it still has feeding problems about every 20 rounds. I love the gun, but will not carry it if it ain't reliable. When I had it at the local smith, I also had him put a dated set of Kimber nite sights on it. They are pretty dim. A wilson Combat bulletproof extractor and slide stop were put in, and a Wilson ambi safety. I also put a C&S MSH in it.

I've been trying to decide what to do with this gun, so I looked at the Gunsmith links on this forum, and went to The Action Works website. Their price for the reliabilty package seemed very reasonable, as did the price for the Colt Basic Street Package. I decided to give them a call yesterday. I've heard good things about them, but have no first hand experience.

Well, I got this very nice gentleman on the phone, and we ended up talking about my Kimber for about 20 minutes. We talked about mags, different options on sights, all kinds of stuff. When I got ready to get off the phone, I asked who I was speaking with, and he said Don Williams. I guess I was kind of surprised that he would be taking his own calls.

Has anyone here had any work done by Don? He has a great rep, and was very patient with me on the phone. I'd love to give him some business, and get my Kimber a new set of Heinies, match trigger, and reliabilty work. I may even do the dehorn, but I have to see if the slide has to be refinished. It's stainless.

Any info would be appreciated.

Don has built several guns for me over the past years.  I have one 45 there now hopefully nearing completion and just got two back from him.  He does excellent work and is indeed a very nice person to work with.

I recommend him without reservation.  JD

Don has done custom work for me on four 1911s(Colts). I have been very satisfied with his work on all 4. He has always taken the time to answer my questions, explain etc. Before I decided to have my first 1991A1 customized I sent written inquiries to about 12-15 'smiths who specialized in 1911s. I received about 8 back via the mail, most of which were price lists, with handwritten notes on one or two. Don called me at home and after we talked, I decided on having him do the work. He is a class act, and I would not hesitate to recommend him, nor would I hesitate to have him do more work for me in the future.

I had a very similar problem with a Para. I bought the gun because it had all the trappings of an ultimate carry weapon on a realistic (albeit pricy) budget. The thing was that it became a money pit in short order with $40 shipping here, there, there, and there. then you have to dump a good 500 rounds down the pipe to ensure the weapon functions right after the mod (which it often didn't). When all was said and done, I was just fed up with the pistol. The pistol is in order now, but all the aggrevation left a bad taste in my mouth and it just sits in the safe, now. I spent enough on the list price, the "necessary" factory add-ons, the warranty work, shipping costs, and the test ammunition costs to have purchased the Wilson I now have in the first place. The plain truth is that Kimbers don't sit on a very high position with respect to the 1911 totem pole. That's fine when you have the 5" range master, but when you are buying a compact and putting your life on the line, it might be worth a second thought to carry a second rate weapon.

I say all this not to insult your pistol but to inform you of the pitfalls of dumping money into something that should but doesn't work right. It can and does get expensive when you are one of the unlucky peple that gets a poorly functioning piece.

Not insulting at all. I've had the exact same thoughts myself, and have come very close to just moving onto something else. For some reason, I really like this pistol, and wish I could salvage it, but throwing good money after bad definately does not sit well.

Thanks guys for the input on The Action Works. It sounds like Don's rep is well deserved, and if I do decide to get the work done, I'll now feel even better about using him to do it,
