[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How do you carry (Page 1 of 2)

| I can't decide on what holster I want to use. Everytime I figure it out I see something diffrent. I was thinking of a comp tac IWB type holster. I currently carry a micro compact but how are you guys getting away with gov sized 1911s? |
The best IWB holster ever made, when used with a belt of proper fit. |
I concure |
For the first time in AWHILE I cannot agree, but wont disagree with SGB and Lumpy. I meant to put the reviews up in the holster section earlier but been away on business. I owned the VM-2 for most of my 1911 career, as short as it may be. I decided one day to call Matt Delfatti's shop to see if they had anything sitting on the shelf that wasn't spoken for. Low and behold, they had a IWB 1911 holster for a 1911. I dont have the time tonight to post a real scientific critique, nor do I know if Milt Sparks first came out with this type of design vice versa Matt Delfatti, since they are very closely related. But, after carrying this holster the last 2 weeks, I am starting to see some very unique features of the Del Fatti that I enjoy more over then Sparks. And in the spirit of discussion, I am not saying one is BETTER than the other, there are just some things I enjoying more now the last couple weeks of carrying... |
Please elaborate, with pics if possible. I want an Alessi OWB now. |
|
I went with a Galco Deep cover IWB for my then Officer-sized pistol. I use that same package for my WC compact. Pros - Affordable, quality leather - No guilt abusing/wearing (out) the holster - Has withstood 4 years of carry and sweat in a very hot climate so far - Tuckable - J clip makes for instant transition (jam it in the pants and you are g2g) - J clip is near invisible. Snaps advertise you are carrying an IWB and you HAVE to match the belt... not so with the Galco Their deep cover mag carriers have all the above mentioned pros as well. |
Alessi's CQC/S is the creme de la creme of OWB holsters IMO. |
|
IWB#2 from Kramer - works fine for me concealing a 5" 1911. It's similar to the Summer Special from Milt Sparks, as well as many other makers. I had a chance to examine a VersaMax 2 recently, and it was very nice. It was just too hard to stomach the 20 week wait, so I picked up another Kramer on eBay. |
The holster is the key. This holster is very well made and very stiff: it does a great job of pulling the butt of the pistol in against your body. I wear it under a large untucked shirt and you can't see it. Under a jacket it is easily concealed. But here in Houston it is pretty hot for at least half the year, so an untucked large shirt works fine. And maybe it helps that I am a large person - 185#, 6'. |
Thats an OWB holster though right? I'm 6" 195 and would have never though of being able to conceal a double stack! |
Buy a XL shirt and wear it untucked. And under a sport jacket it works great. It helps to wear a real gunbelt (very stiff) as this helps the holster do it's job. |
I hated the skyops. I've still got it around here somewhere.... |
I highly recommend the Mitch Rosen belts and holsters. I have been using them for 15+ years with excellent results. |
DAMN!!!! Sweet leather!!! In fact, there is a LOT of nice leather in this thread!!!! |
Thanks and there are, indeed, many fine holsters being displayed here ! |
Thank you, sir. Over the years I have learned, in addition to spending your money properly on as good of a firearm as you can own ( or better ) it is wise indeed to spend same type of money on quality accessories....particularly on guns that you may need for some important reason. I must admit that the old Aker holster ( the beat up one behind and to the left of the HP ) has done VERY admirably over the past 13 years. The leather is a touch too soft BUT the HP fits well and DRAWS well from that rig. In adddition it hugs my body very well, yet is very comfortable. Every now and then, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn. I was young and didn't have a lot of money when I first bought that HP...but I got what I could afford and what I knew I could shoot well. I looked for quite a while before choosing that rig ( oh, I wanted a Galco.... ) and it did the job. Later on, I could better afford Galco rigs and they are wonderful. It's the proper choice of leather and the proper treatment of the leather that really makes holsters like Mitch Rosen, Galco, Safari Land and others stand out. |
Thanks for the help on my point. To the OP - Everyone has their own opinion on holsters. Some agree, some don't. For most it depends on where you are carrying and what you are doing while you are carrying. How concealable do you need it? Tucked or untucked? What size belt? See where I am going with this? This is why many of us have an entire drawer (or more) of leather. It's a process of finding what suits YOU. Good luck on your search. |
Here are some that I had my wife take of my a while back while trying to help someone else out: You find the gun. It's a full size Kimber. And before anyone says anything, The equipment is my brother's, he was getting ready for a show. Yes, that is a playtex box in the background, we were about to start moving. I was not watching E!, my wife was. There. That should take care off all the wise ass comments. |
Yeah, I've got a comp-tac coming from the EE I'm going to try with my little micro but I'm looking hard at some nice leather. The only thing, and many have said this, is you have to match the belt to the holster. I guess this isn't a problem if you get the belt/holster from the same place! |
| Everyday carry is Glock 19 stoked with Ranger 127gr +P+ in Kydex FIST IWB with a Milt Sparks IWB spare mag holder, Surefire E2 Executive(even during the day), Kershaw Blur on right back pocket (less obvious), Mace foam in weak hand pocket and usually three extra mags ride in my truck. All that is concealed in Florida heat with a button down shirt. |

I figured you were going to have to quit showing these pics or start making a disclaimer
