I just got a set of Gunners the other day from Brownells.  Before now, I've ordered from NMTactical here in the EE, and though I paid a bit more, I've been very happy with the service.

I'm not sure why, but the other day I ordered from Brownells instead.  The Gunners I've had in the past came from Simonich.  The ones I got from Brownells came from Strider.

I'm not sure if there is a change in the manufacturing process, or if Simonich and Strider versions are just slightly different.  However, the ones I've gotten in the past with Simonich packaging were much nicer.  They were profiled just like GI grips, and were an even thickness.

The Striders I have are wider at the top than the bottom.  The bottom is cut at a slightly off angle, which means they leave a gap that does not match any of the magwell eauipped guns I have, with more gap towards the rear.  Also, the grip screw holes are a little off, and the profile is off, with more material towards the front and less in the back of the grip.

Basically, they are still great grips, just not made to the same high standard of the Simonich marked grips.  I would show a comparison photo, but I can't find my camera.  Has anyone else had the same issues?

Strider is marketing the Gunner grips with permission of Simmonich's widow.  Simmonich was killed in a traffic collision.

Strider's are a bit different than Simonich's. Duane and I talked about the grips being available through Brownells a while back and the Strider Gunners would fit tightly on the bushings. Well apparently people were  complaining to Brownells about it and Brownells talked to Duane to see if he could change the bushing recess depth a bit so they would fit every 1911 made out there.
Apart from that, the earlier Strider Gunners were a bit thinner but have always had that rear gap. I can ask Duane next week about it if you want he'll be up in this area.

I have to say I really prefer the Simonich. They fit much better in my opinion. They also have a nice bevel on the front and back side of the grips. Strider has a shelf and also feel much thicker. I just wish I knew of a source for the original Simonich Gunner grips in coyote brown.

So....if any of you out there have any original Simonich grips in coyote brown I am always willing to pay top $$$$ for them beveled or flat bottom! Really I have paid a little over new prices for used grips I like them that much. I just prefer that they have not been sanded down to no grip.

The strider's I handled recently were thick.  Too much so at the edges.  The checkering was extremely sharp - gloves required.  Handled another set that had been sanded down - still sharp.

hobbs5624, thanks for the heads up. I have been planning on buying a set of Gunners for the past two weeks and I have a S&A magwell also. Now I know to stick with the Simonich versions.

Both seem like great grips, I've just gotten used to the Simonich, not to mention Chirstine is an exceptionally nice woman.  One other thing to consider is this.  The Simonich grips, when cut for ambis, is very thin at the cut, and the holes milled into the grips go right through.  The Gunners made by Strider are much thinker here, and the holes don't go through.

So I take it Simonich no longer makes the grips at all?

Pretty sure they do, I just ordered through Brownells instead of NMT, and
brownells has the Strider version.

NMTactical is out of the Black/Flat bottom/Ambi cut versions by the way. I just got the email about my order. I guess it's off to Simonich's website for me.
