The first gun I bought was a Glock 17. I have always had good luck with Glocks, and purchased five of them over the years. Over the years I have bought other pistols besides Glock. I currently own a Beretta, HK, EAA, Rossi, Ruger, and a Springfeild. So it can be said that while I like Glocks, I have tried other pistols and been happy with them. The exception to this has been the 1911. I purchased a Colt Gold cup that was neither accurate nor reliable. There was also a Springfeild V10 and a 1911 Gov that failed to perform even reasonably well.
Over the years I have heard all of the pro 1911 mantra such as "you never tried a good one" and "my 1911 runs 100%" In competitions I saw many 1911's that were accurate and fairly reliable. None were a hunded percent. But then again my other guns arent either. Even my first, trusty Glock 17 has had misfeeds- 2 to be exact. Its not that I expect any pistol to be absolutly reliable, because there is no such thing. I even had a revolver refuse to go boom. Every 1911 I owned would jam damn near every session it was fired in. A problem no other pistol I have owned has shared, if it had I would have broomed them like I did the 1911s I've owned. People keep telling me how great they are- "If 1911's arent great how come LAPD and FBI swat uses them?" This combined with the accuracy and trigger of the 1911 which I liked, prompted me to once again buy a 1911 (supposedly a good one too) to see for my self if these pistols can run accurately AND reliably. In doing this I have decided not to come to any rush judgements about the gun and give it 500 rounds to break in. I will post further range reports and confessions here as I get closer to being broke in. Here are pics of the gun (Kimber Pro TLE / RL II) and my first target shot with it at 10 yards. first session I fired 120 rounds and experianced 3 misfeeds, 1 of them being a shell case problem.

what part of utah are you in?
im from slc area and i have a accurate and reliable 1911 your welcome to try.

ETA: i actually have 2, one is real tight and has nice sights and you can put the round right where you want it the other rattles a little when you shake it and will put a round right where you want it but the sights are small.

I'm not trying to get flamed here, but 120 rounds and 3 malfuctions is no good.  Your 1911 should be golden for several hundred rounds easy.

I'm not a Kimber basher.......but lets just say I have been less then impressed with their latest offerings.  The only 1911's I have had any problems with have been series II Kimbers that have been made within the last 2 years.

Trust me, if you like 1911's and they way they shoot/feel, you should have no problems getting one that runs great.

While I don't feel that 3 misfeeds in 120 rounds is good, the gun is all metal and somewhat tight. My XD45 had two stoppages in the first 150 rounds but has not had another incident in the past 600 rounds. I'm going to go shoot it again in a few minutes and see how she does this time.

I've really been wanting to pick up a TLE RLII Pro for some reason. Nice gun!

Is it an external or internal extractor, and have you considered some better mags?

While I am not a fan of Kimber as they went to the EE for a while (they are doing the IE again from all I have heard) but I must admit that a Kimber CDP Pre Series II was my first 1911.
It turned me into true full house custom junkie!
Yeah, I spend too much money on them but they are GREAT!

I have 8 Glocks and can't shoot them worth crap (trigger control issues) but I still will admit it is hard for anything to take the abuse a Glock will.

It just comes down to what works best for you!

Enjoy it and please keep us posted.

Once you get below commander size, IMHOP you need a custom smith to build and/or tune your 1911.

Did another 100 rounds today with one misfeed. Im not sure if the case was out of spec or what, but the slide just didnt quite close. It was close enough to being closed that I pulled the trigger and the hammer droped, but no bang. When I went to eject the case, the slide seemed a little stiff to retract. The round fired fine on the next run through. This isnt the first time I have noticed, this guns chamber seems a little tight. Are all kimber chambers this way

I've heard many peeps claim that Kimber chambers are tight, however I've never experience one.

I think your evaluation of the ammunition being out of spec to be a more plausible reason, specially if it's WW white box.

My Glock will eat anything.  Especially WWB.

My 1911 Springfield was a dog outa the box.  I has a malf every other mag.  I replaced the extractor, recoil spring, and slide stop with Wilson... and that thing has been pretty much 100% since then... except for when I put 800-1000 rounds through it in a weekend without a cleaning.  After 800 or so, I get the occasional fail to fully chamber.  A squirt of lube and its back to 100%.

4 malfs when new... I wouldnt cry about.  Now - on the *second* 1000 rounds after break-in... if I got more than 1 or 2... I'd damned sure wanna know why.

Read your owner's manual. It says you will need at least 500 rounds to break it in. My 25 yr. anniversary model has 300 rounds through it without any feeding issues and is deadly accurate with the new night sights.

lol i have seen that with WWB i allways just give my ammo a once over while loading the mags, i have also run into caseings with a large bulge in them that will jam the chamber closed nice and tight.

Got a bunch of WWB a while back for a training session.  I was looking at the boxes and noticed they didn't say USA on them and the box size and internal carriers were different.  Looked at the back of the box and it said "Made in Chzech republic".  I was pissed and the stuff did not work well in previously reliable gunns.  The rim dimmensions seemed to be off.

I have a Kimber eclipse target 2 . I have had it for  a little over 2 years. In that time I have shot thousands of rounds in practice, 3 gun, uspsa, and idpa. I normally shoot reloads in it for practice, and cci blaser for competition. Asside form the break in, I have had 1  failure to feed, and that shell wouldnt  have fit in a 500 s&w chamber.  This gun has the dreaded external extractor, which I love. I think  there are 2 very important things to remember with any 1911. First use only wilson combat, or chip Mccormick magazines, second  with any cheaper ammo, or reloads, check them with a case guage. With these 2  conditions, I would put my 1911 up against any glock, or  custom whatever on the market.  Oh one other thing I think needs mentioning, I now can no longer shoot my kimber in competition. My wife Has relieved me of it, and now I am forced to shoot her XD.

+1 on Waxman's suggestion to use Wilson Mags.
They load up so much smoother than the stock Kimber mags.
I gather Kimber got the message and is now offering an upscale mag
to compete.

I shot 1000 rounds before cleaning my Kimber Commander.
No problems. External Extractor.
I'm guessing my experience is why Kimber is selling
boat loads of 1911's which is not to say there aren't
some that leave the factory that need tuning to
shoot right.

Tried so many Glocks but they just don't fit my hand like a 1911
so no Glocks for me.

I was bored yesterday so I decided to have a TLE/RL II vs. XD45 shoot off.

The results- 100 rounds thru the XD with zero malfunctions
100 rounds thru the Kimber with zero malfunctions

I was alomost suprised at how close the two of them performed in most all areas. The XD seemed to do a little better at my longer distance phases, but the kimber really shined while doing double taps offering accurate fast follow up shots.

The 10 yard comparison pics-
28 shots with the XD

32 shots with the Kimber

Did another 100 rounds tonight with zero malfunctions. This pistol just might stay running long enough to win a place in my heart!
