I am looking to buy my first 1911, I would like a full size gun.  It will be used for plinking practice and as a home defense backup.  I am on a budget of about $300-$500.  Am I better off  buying a used higher end gun, or a new lower end.  Does anyone know about the Kahr 1911, I had one offered to me?

I would always suggest buying a quality used on a budget.  That's a pretty slim budget for a 1911 too.  Check out the Rock Island Armory stuff.  Or the Springfield GI or Mil-Spec.

I got a RIA 1911 a few months ago.  It has been flawless so far with about 300 rds. through it so far.  Mainly a mix of wolf and georgia arms ammo.  It's pretty accurate too.  I got it from classic arms for $299.  Everybody else had them for at least 350.

Theres nothing wrong with buying used if you know what to look for or if the dealer will take it back if it has any problems. .

I'd buy used higher-end.  I bought new low-end and dumped way too much money into it just trying to make it how I like.

Kahr is now producing the Auto Ordnance name.  Stay away from these guns unless you have the opportunity to test fire it before purchase.  Yeah, Kahr has supposedly improved the quality over the old A/O guns but the samples I've seen are still plenty rough.  I was actually stupid enough to buy one of the Kahr guns even though I'd had bad experiences with A/O in the past.  The Kahr didn't even feed ball!

Your best bet is a Springfield WWII.  Buy a new one, as the few used ones I've seen command nearly the same price.  Rock Island may be an option, also if you're seriously short on cash.

Get a good used gun. For that price range you can get a Springfield GI new, or used with some better sights.
