| I was just wondering if there are any pros or cons one way or the other regarding an internal or external extractors. |
|
Internals are the traditional 1911 extractor. Replacements are easy to find. Adjusting them yourself is fairly easy. the extractor is 1 piece. If they are made of tool steel and adjusted properly they are extreemly reliable. MIM and cast extractors are genrally thought to be weaker and less reliable than tool steel extractors. Externals are genrally brand specific so getting replacement parts can be more difficult. Ex's tend not to be adjustable are 3 or more peices. Ex's vary in reliability, Kimbers are genrally thought to be inferior to the ones on Sigs and S&Ws. |
| I bought one of the Kimber Custom TLE II's with the external extractor about 4 months ago with the currnet round count around 1700 with a mix of FMJ's and Hollowpoints. The gun is very accurate and has been very reliable. I had 2 FTE's in the first 50 rounds but since then it has run perfect, with 0 malfunctions. However be aware that there are several lemons with respect to Kimbers 1911's. My Sigs, and HK's have been flawless. I also had a Glock for a while and its external extractor never gave me any hassles. Most companies that offer the external extractor have a very good track record with them, however until they can get something totally reliable, the 1911's run best with internal extractors, just my $.02. |

all of my 1911s were the IE type. I did break one via the dropping round in chamber, but that was it. I just bought a Kimber Stainless II and it has the EE. there was NO problems with extraction or feeds due to the EE. granted, ive only shot ~500+ rounds thru it. also, my BHPS and CZs have external extractors and i have had NO problems with them too. |
Perhaps not. S&W has used the 945 extractor on their PC1911 guns. And it's a proven system that works very well. Considering how long S&W has used externals on all it's autos it stands to reason they know how to make a good external extrator. |
