Are these 1911s worth their hefty price tag? I am considering a Kobra carry. I have a kimber cdp ultra series one, that has served me well. Just looking for something a little bit longer and can handle an eight round mag..

thanks to all that reply and for your time.

I bought a two tone Kobra 5", and a Blued Kobra 5" which I regrettably sold to my good buddy BSBG. The EB is very accurate, and on par with my Wilsons as far as accuracy and reliability. I like the Novaks on the EB, and the "slip fit" concept. What I like especially about the EB Kobra is the snakeskin pattern on the front strap and MSH housing. The feel in the hand is good. The Stainless finish on the EB's is nice, it's a satin bead blast finish, with no polishing. Ed's frames were made by LB at one time have been made by him in house in the past couple of years. The Bluing on his pistols while not as rich as the bluing on some other 1911's I've seen, is still good though. The overall fit and finish of the pistols I have seen have been superb, and the one that had to go back for warranty work was turned around very quickly. I hear from the guys that own the Bobtail (kobra carry), that they like them a lot.

In summary: There are a lot of options for the money that a Kobra Carry would cost you, however if you like what the EB offers, and you got the money, Go for it!!! They are great pistols, and Ed will take care of you in the event of a problem.

Thanks for your input. I guess I am trying to decide between an Ed Brown or a Les Baer. they cost about the same, just not sure which I would like better...

I would vote for the Ed brown KC. I am selling my wilson fullsize since my KC is just that much more gun

One thing you'll notice is that you see a fair amount of used Les Baer and Wilson for sale, while you almost NEVER see a used Brown.

I've had my Kobra Carry for not quite two years now. It's been and is 100% reliable, is highly accurate, and is well-suited for concealed carry. The Les Bauer pistols are of high quality, but, in my view, are built much too tightly for a carry/combat pistol. Handle a new one and you'll see what I mean.

Given the choice between Les Baer and Ed Brown, I'd choose the Brown every time.

I've noticed that too. I was reading somewhere, I'm not sure if it was information put out by the ATF or what, but it showed how many pistols various manufacturers put out on a yearly basis. IIRC, this was a couple years ago or so, but EB had put out only a few hundred pistols one year, and I think Wilson had out out several or more thousand pistols. May have something to do with it however, it seesm the EB guys do hang on to them.

I think Ed Brown's shop (I say shop because Ed doesn't build pistols anymore, but his sons do) makes some of the nicest 1911s on the planet.
If you can afford one, go for it. You won't be sorry.

Any opinions on how the rear sight is secured? Durable enough for defensive use?

I disagree with the Wilson comparison.  There is a gun shop 20 minutes away that has three or four used EB's right now.  The only used Wilson's I see are the KZ's.  I do think Wilson and EB are among the best made.

Ed doesn't build pistols anymore, but it is well known he checks the MAJORITY of the pistols leaving his shop for quality control.

I found out yesterday what the "master dealer's" prices are on CQBs, and after seeing that, makes me feel like bill himself isn't checking alot of the 1911s leaving his shop production line

Both are still great 1911s, setting the standards for today's smithing.
