[Mini Rant On]

So I go into a local gunshop this weekend and they have a Remington Rand on display. I ask to take a closer look....

- added a Trigger Shoe
- replaced original sights with ugly target sights
- Barrel was marked "COLT 1911"
- rubber stocks
- brand new blued barrel bushing of unknown manufacture

and thats just the mods I could see w/o taking it apart.
All for $985 dollars! A steal for a piece of history according to the kid behind the counter!

[/Mini Rant Off]

So where can I get me a proper, older 1911?

If people took care of thier guns and did not fug them up then they would be common and not collectable anymore. Everytime one is destroyed it makes all the others worth more.

Some of the low grade guns are more collectable than high grade because people kept high grade guns in high grade condition so they are common, the low grade varients were truck/tractor guns so got beat to shit and destroyed.

Well, the BBL could have been changed in the service, the rest of the garbage was done because they were not collectable 40, 50 or 60 years ago. Thay were just pistols that grandpa, or dad brought home or bought from the DCM. $12.50 would buy you a 1911 even in the 60s. Nobody thought that they would be worth anything stock so they did what they wanted to do to them. Even the Military made no attempt to keep them together and many if not most of them are non original from new. The only thing the military cared about was if they worked and if the SN# of the frame stayed the same. Slides, BBLs, and the rest of the parts were thrown in the cleaning tank together and what ya pulled out you put together. Same for rebuilds, only thing the military cared about was good parts or bad parts.

Now however, they have achieved collectable status and non-dicked with ones command high prices. The one's like you describe are just 300 dollar guns looking for a sucker to take them home and unfortunately there are plenty of those so prices stay high.

I am fortunate to have 4 that are original, 2 Colts that are numbered frame and slide correctly, One Ithica with original paperwork, and one Rem Rand that is 100% from new. [I doubt I will ever find another as nice] The rest are put togethers and I know it but paid accordingly. Unfortunately dealers and sellers look at the books and price their guns according to the high end even if they are in no way close. As long as people buy them, they will remain high.

I have always had luck finding them in SMALL shows in the country, never in the bigger shows. I watch the doors closely and if I see something interesting I pounce. I do not wait for them to hit the dealers. Bought one very nice for 200 bucks several years ago, guy just wanted to sell dads old pistol as he did not like them. I was happy to oblige him.

Hows this one. Refinished, with the US property mark ground off. Dealer told me thats what the Military did if it was sold legally. Only 1200 bucks.

What state do you live in? I hit small shows frequently and come across them occasionally. I have guys who look for them for me. [sell at shows but do not collect guns or sell them] One has found me a Ithica with release papers and all related paperwork and box, and a 100% 1945 RR. Not to mention a Colt ACE still new in the box and wrapped in wax paper.
