A pistol with fixed combat sights shoots 4 inches low. Would you make the rear sight HIGHER or LOWER. Forgive the caps please. Thanks for opinion.

To raise the point of impact the front sight needs to be lower or the rear higher. You can file the front sight down, but go slow and only file a little at a time.

I should have asked: It shoots low at what range? With what load? Rested? Does it shoot low for other shooters? How do different bullet weights affect the poi?

I shot Rem 230 Ball ammo and Rem 230 HP. Shot a couple groups from a rest and about 3 inches low. It has three dot sight picture. filing may help but wont move the white dots. Anyway woke up early and installed a 18# wilson recoil spring (Damn big difference in effort to rack slide) and installed a wilson extended slide realese. Back to the range.

It's easy enough to determine how much correction you need:

Error * Sight Radius / Distance to Target = Amount of sight correction

All measurements are in inches.
Error is the distance between POI and POA.

A lot of the SA pistols have a problem with shooting low. It is apparently an error made at the time of manufacture.
You can either fix it yourself or call Springfield to return it and have them fix it under warranty. That is what I would do as they will check the pistol out thoroughly before they return it.
Before you take any corrective action have someone else shoot it to verify that it is the pistol at fault. You can include that info when you contact Springfield.
You can also change the sights to Novaks, etc.

+1

There have been tons of threads about this.  Everyone that has a problem with a SA shooting low and sends it back to SA seems to be quite pleased in the end.  I'm not sure what they are doing to remedy the actual problem but everyone seems happy when they get them back.

Edit: Er, that would mean you're shooting high then...

First group I aimed at 6 o'clock it was awful low. Now if the point of aim is the top of the target I get a X.
