Just sold a custom Colt with all the bells and whistles ( front strap checkering, bomar sights, hard chrome and do on) I just hated hard chrome
All my 1911 are front strap checkered higher end guns blued, black, or color case hardened. I want a GI type with GI sights and a set of stags to use around the property. Part of me wants to spend and get the CZ 1911A1. But then I see these cheap ati gi guns for less than $400 Even beat to crap colts are $500 or more I'm not going to ccw with this so I feeI don't want to spend a lot. What says the hive get a cz or older nice colt...or some cheapo ati or tihas? |

If you really want it to look old school keep an eye out for old beater colts or the Argentina hold dgfm fmap guns which will give you the look. With old classics it is all about patience and finding the right thing. It may take months to stumble on the right deal. I have found old beater colts for under $600 more times than I can count. For instance an old ww1 era gun with the property mark removed did pretty easy to find have little
Collector value and often go for cheap. Other than local shops keeping an eye on gunbroker you can sometimes get lucky. There are a few sub $500 colts there right now |
| I did the same thing with a Rock Island GI. I made it look like a Magnum PI 1911. Reblued it (hot blue), put on brown GI plastic grips, and smoothed out the trigger. It cost me $350 on Black Friday a few years ago. Ended up selling it to a buddy who like it, too much. I might do the same thing again with a 9mm GI Rock. |

If all you want is a simple GI, I'd just pick up a Springfield Mil-Spec, but honestly, I'd look at the RIAs if I was trying to stick to a 550-600 dollar budget and get better sights, or spend a little more for a Springfield Loaded model, or a new Colt Series 70.
I'd say based on your post it might be worth it to spring for the series 70. |

Like you said, you just have to be patient. I stumbled across it and snatched it up. Quoted:

One thing though, from what I remember about my GI, it had higher profile sights than a USGI 1911. But as I age I don't see that as a detraction. I can barely pick up the sights on a USGI pistol anymore. |
| My quick scan of gun broker shows at least six colts currently in the sub $400 range. Yes often the prices escalate out of control in the last few hours of an auction, but sometimes you get lucky. Even though I need another 1911 like a hole in my head, there is a ww2 era Colt someone put high profile sights on sitting at $305 I am keeping an eye on that one |
