Colt Competition Pistol or Springfield Range Officer? Unfortunately it takes 2 or 3 months to get a handgun permit approved in some areas of NJ. However it is giving me plenty of time to research my next purchase. Any thoughts on the Colt Competition Government compared to the RO? Thanks.

This is worth what you paid for it....

Anecdotally I've seen pretty much flawless functioning from RO's right out of the box.

I've only seen one guy with a Colt Competition, but it choked on nearly every stage I saw the guy shoot, at several matches.  Still don't know if he's got it sorted out yet.

YMMV

I've had far better luck with Springfields than Colts. I've owned two ROs. My current DW Valor is better than both.

My RO was essentially perfect.

Yeah I'm a Springfield fan. I personally prefer the Loaded model though. I don't care for the adjustable rear sight of the Range Officer model. If you have more cash I'd get the TRP model.

Range officer. The colt is a good gun but the RO is series 70 not 80 and springfield has better customer service so they would get my money.

I literally looked at all three options, and choose the Valor.  Highly recommend the Dan Wesson line.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a 1911, but I too don't really like adjustable sights. This is why I was excited to see the RO Operator. It has a Novak style rear sight and red fo front. Price point is still pretty nice too.

TRP if you can afford it, Loaded Operator if you want a rail, but the RO is a damn fine pistol.  I would get the SA over the Colt.

Honestly, if you are looking for that style of 1911 I'd look at a Dan Wesson 1911 like a Pointman or a Heritage.  They run $1300 in my area, but are very nice pistols.

My RO may be the most accurate pistol I own.  Certainly one of the most accurate.  For the money these are just about impossible to beat.  I bought mine early and it was not much more than $700.  $735 as I recall.

The Range Officer is designed to shoot with the customs right out the box.
You can't go wrong. No need to spend $1300 for a one hole shooter.
Unless you want too.

Is this Colt Competition an actual Colt manufactured by Colt? Or is it similar to Colt Competition Rifles that are built by an outside contractor with unknown parts and is Colt in name only?

Either way, I am still voting for Springfield Armory. You will have a hard time finding any complaints about S.A.'s guns. They are an excellent value and a stand up company with integrity.

Yes, it is an actual colt.  It is their attempt to produce something comparable in price/features to the RO.

My 9mm RO Operator runs like a champ right out of the box. Springfield makes a fine 1911, especially for the price.

The only feature on the Colt I like over the SA is the undercut trigger guard. Overall the SA gets my vote...and will likely be my next purchase.

They're not even in the same league.

The RO is a great 1911 for people who don't want to spend too much money. I put a FO front sight, VZ grips, VZ pre cut grip tape for the front strap, and did a trigger job on mine. I shoot it more than all of my other pistols combined - by a long shot.

This. I wish SA would do undercuts but they won't. The colt is not a bad pistol, I'm just not a colt fanboy.

for about 75 they will undercut the trigger guard, either style.

My experience is pretty limited with both, but the SA impressed me more FWIW, which isn't much.

Yes I know. I have had this done to several of their pistols, + the cost of refinish and shipping. It would be nice as a std option.

Yep, by the time you pay for shipping and refinishing it's pretty expensive on a $800 gun.  Still, when I get my RO that will eventually be on the to-do list along with checkering the front strap, adding a magwell and ambi safety, and a good trigger job.

Same here. I'd take an "NM" serial number prefix "Loaded" model any day over a Range Officer or the Colt. The RO is still a pretty nice pistol however. As to the TRP, if it's in your price range OP then that would be my choice no question... I too hate the adjustable rear sight. I've scraped more skin off my side while doing drills and quick draws off my side than I can count! And I'm by no means fat nor do I have haunches...

I looked at a Colt Competition yesterday while I was at the LGS.  It was tightly fitted, and looked pretty good overall.  I'd still go with the Springfield RO, but I was impressed with the Colt I looked at yesterday.

One thing I found odd about the Colt was the fiber optic front sight.  It was BLUE, and quite dark compared to either red or green.  Not a big deal, because it is easy to change out, but it was really weird that Colt put that in there in the first place....

Depends on what you want to use the 1911 for. There isn't allot of review out there for the colt yet and the few I've read didn't put a # on a specific accuracy test (10 shot from rest @ 25yds with ammo a/b/c etc).

Common mil-spec 1911's will easily do bowling pins @ 25ft or torso targets, 6" plates, poppers @ 25yds. I'm sure the colt would be fine for any of those things along with general range work/plinking/hd or just having an enjoyable day at the range.

That being said, several years ago I was in the market for a 1911. My needs were pretty simple, wanted a 1911 that I could use for 50ft bullseye along with playing on the bowling pin table. Instead of shooting bowling pins @25ft we setup 12ga shotgun shells on the bowling pin table and shoot them @50ft. So after allot of reading/asking/hands on range time I ended up with a couple of 1911's.

I reload and cast my own bullets, didn't take long to find loads that would allow for some quality range time. A cast lead 125gr hp doing 1100fps+ in the 9mm ro.

The tried and true h&g #68/bullseye combo in the 45acp ro.

Both 1911 ro's are bone stock, no mods/tweaks/nada. This is how they perform right out of the box. Could the ro's step up to be able to compete in other range games??? I think so. The real question is can other 1911's in their price range step down to be able to compete with the ro's.

Everyone has their favorite spotted puppy, mine happens to be $$$$ and I put my hard earned $$$$ down on a couple of 1911's that would allow me to be competitive. With the  ro's. I know that if I loose a match it isn't because I was outgunned it was because I was out shot. At the end of the day it would take one heck of a marksman to say that they are better shooters than either of my ro's.

Here's the thing.  Everybody considers the RO as only being good for the range.  This is hogwash.  I carry mine for self defense.  That horrible adjustable rear sight can easily be fixed with a dremel and a file.  I tapered both sides of the rear sight and refinished it and it gives a very good sight picture without gouging me.  I have a Tru-Glo TFO front sight coming to replace The FO front sight on the pistol.  I'm also going to put a flat recoil spring in it, as I do all my 1911s.  I've put tape on the front strap and added a set of RAASCO desert ironwood smooth grips to it which I already had.  I actually like good durable adjustable sights on a pistol so they can be adjusted to the load I am shooting.  Ray Chapman and many others won many matches with Bo-Mar rear sights on their pistols.  These adjustable rear sights Springfield is using are very similar to the Bo-Mar.
