I want a Royal Blue Colt 1911 for mainly a show/bbq fun gun.

I want a finish similar to Colt's royal blue from a python with the frame and slide all done to match.  Also it'll need to be a retro style so no gigantic sites or other "tacticool" accessories.  It will have ivory grips.

Thought about finding a WW1 reproduction and just sending it to Colt for a factory royal blue or maybe an original older gun?  Kimber makes one they advertise as having a deep blue finish but in the pics it doesn't look that glossy.  Found some WW1 guns in decent shape but they're all on Gunbroker and the condition worries me.

Budget is about $2k and while it'll get shot it won't be a dedicated shooter, other ones fill that role.  A royal blued 1911 with ivory grips is just one of the best looking guns ever made imo.

Any ideas?

I had my Python done by Colt a couple of years ago.  Turned out great.  You could goggle "firearms restoration" or the like and get a number of hits.   Doug Turnbull's operation tops my list if funds were available.
edit for crap typing.

Didn't Series 70 and earlier National match pistols come with the Royal Blue finish?  OP - do you have a Colt 1911 to send in to Colt and have them do a Royal Blue job on it>

The 1911's I own aren't a vintage style.

Question!

My local gun store just got in a 1917 and a 1944 dated 1911.  The 1917 is a little pitted but the 1944 has a really nice original finish with no pitting.  Should I buy the 1944 or buy a WW1 reproduction to have refinished?  I'm kinda leaning towards the 1944 original.

Buying a piece of history like a 44 vintage 1911A1 and then refinishing it should get you flogged in the public square. Buy a recent production for the sake of God

You would spend $3000 to ruin an original 1944 Colt which would then be worth $750? Look - just get a Series '70 reproduction from Colt and have it Royal Blued. This will cost you about $1100 total and the gun will still be worth $1100.

Since you're in AL please tell me which store so I can go save that '44 from you.

Get a semi-recent Colt and sent it to the Colt Custom Shop for a re-finish.  I've got an Enhanced Commander that was refinished in royal blue by Colt and it looks like you could sink your fingers into it.  CCS does good work.  I've got a couple 1911's they've worked on for me.  It'll take a while, but good things come to those who wait....

Why not get a Series 70 repro, and have it done by Doug Turnbull's shop?

The Kimber Royal II may be just what you are looking for.  The one I've seen person had an amazing deep blue finish that absolutely reminded me of the Colt royal blue guns of days gone by.  Also, I'm pretty sure the Kimber Royal is actually finished by Turnbull.  Check it out.
