This gun is for a very detail oriented customer who carefully selected the base gun that was ‘just right’ for the project and features he had in mind. We used a gun I built about a year ago for the inspiration for his project and further added certain design features, parts, and modifications to make the gun exactly what he desired.

Starting with the Colt base gun I added a weld-up frame and slide fit, Kart barrel, EGW grip safety, Wilson Combat Bulletproof ambi-safety, a Commander style hammer, and a host of other best quality parts.

The slide top was flattened and serrated and the slide was also serrated on the rear to blend and match with the rear sight. The frame was hand-checkered at 20lpi as was the arched mainspring housing that was blended to the frame. The trigger guard was re-cut and contoured and lines straightened throughout the gun including re-cutting the cocking serrations.  The grips were custom made by Craig Spegel and left oversized so I could blend them to the gun, after which I inlayed the Colt medallions.

The year may have just started but I can easily say that this build may end up being my favorite for 2016. Enjoy!

As always that's beautiful work......did you have to clean up the  rollmarks at all? Most of the original 70's I have owned including the large rollmark guns all had "soft rollmarks" that would have been nearly invisible after a finish application

Wow, That's beautiful.

I have a Colt MKIV Series 80 and a Colt Delta Elite (both in stainless) that would be beautiful canvases for your work. I'll be in touch.

Indeed!

BTW Jason, how does the Wilson Combat Bulletproof ambi-safety you used compare to a King's 201A, for fit and function?

Holy crap that's beautiful.  With the Sparks leather that is a truly classic pairing.

10/10.

Looks nice but the lower front of the slide seems odd.

This is truly my dream gun!

Several years ago a buddy of mine wanted to sell a 1911 he had, but didn't use. We made the deal, and it has sat in my safe while I played this over and over in my head...  Should I customize a nice Series 70 Colt, or just buy a current production 1911 with all of the basic mods done at the factory?

After seeing these photos, I had to go look - yup, mine a "Large Letter Gov't model" also. So now I know what mine *could* be. Sigh... more things to add to the mix.

Bob S.

In order to insure they were deep and legible I had them re-engraved prior to me beginning the build.

The Wilson Combat Bulletproof ambi-safety is, at this point, the best ambi on the market… at least in my opinion.
