Hi there - I have a Colt 1991 that ejects the brass forwards (12 o'clock) most of the time.  I reload, so this is pretty inconvenient for me, as I can't go past the firing line at the range, and I loose that brass.

What can I do modify it so that it ejects towards 3 o'clock?  I was thinking that maybe filing the ejector a bit would do it, but I want the experts opinion first.

I would install or have installed an extended ejector.  BTW they are generally too long and have to be trimmed to allow loaded cartridges to be ejected. Also check the extractor.  Inspect it for a good claw and also check it for proper tension holding the cartridges.

What weight recoil spring are you using?

I bought the gun used, so, I'm not sure what recoil spring is in there.  Maybe I should order up a replacement spring and ejector to see what that gets me.   What weight spring is standard for a 1911 - 18lb?

If it's a 5" gun 16# is standard.  Start here.

Depending on how old your Colt is you might just consider ordering a whole set of new springs, including a 16 pound recoil spring and 23 pound mainspring. My mid 90's era 1991 kicks the brass out to 3 o clock with that setup. Still using the stock ejector and extractor.

I suspect what may be happening is that your empty case is coming off the extractor and kind of floating around in the open port until the forward-moving slide kicks it out, thus the forward movement.

Begin with checking the extractor for proper tension and then adjusting if necessary.   http://m1911.org/technic2.htm

Thanks guys!

I'll check on the extractor, and get new springs.  I'll report back as soon as i test it again.
