What is the best USGI clone 1911?

I am very familiar with 1911's and have owned a Wilson for about 20 years.  I want a WWII gun but want to shoot it (and not spend a ton of money).

What are your suggestions?

I will get a CMP 1911 if they happen.

I actually got a Remington Rand rebuild that was also refinished for the exact reason. It's a WW2 gun but not really collectible of special in anyway so I don't mind taking it out once in awhile.

Are you looking for a historically accurate gun, or just an A1 style and appearance?

Rock Island makes an A1 style, and they're not expensive.

Another option is the Remington R1 -  A1 style but better sights.

I picked up an Ithaca 1911-a1 on Gunbroker a few years ago. It was manufactured Feb. 1945. It was an arsenal rebuild with a mix of parts. Paid $800.00. You should be able to find something similar.

Yeah! I'll hold my breath with those. Most likely the good ones (low S/Ns, most complete models, and the special one, US&S, Singers, Rem UMCs and Colts) will end up on the auction block and we'll get the junk...

But to be honest, I'd love to get one...

I want a WWII gun.  A WWI gun too.  I am partial to the 1911 over the A1.

Yes I want one of the CMP guns.

There are several out there in varying degrees of correctness and a considerable price range.  When I went down this path I chose a standard Rock Island.  Added Keyes grips and an arched mainspring housing.  I also added later style sights.  Original GI sights are pretty much useless for anyone over the age of forty.  I'm happy with it and don't have a lot of coin wrapped up.

Springfield. Remington, CZ, Colt, and Auto Ordnance, to name a few, have all put out a GI clone, or something very close to it.
