What is the best USGI clone 1911?
I am very familiar with 1911's and have owned a Wilson for about 20 years. I want a WWII gun but want to shoot it (and not spend a ton of money). What are your suggestions? I will get a CMP 1911 if they happen. |

Save your money and wait for the CMP pistols. Yeah! I'll hold my breath with those. Most likely the good ones (low S/Ns, most complete models, and the special one, US&S, Singers, Rem UMCs and Colts) will end up on the auction block and we'll get the junk... But to be honest, I'd love to get one... |

There are several out there in varying degrees of correctness and a considerable price range. When I went down this path I chose a standard Rock Island. Added Keyes grips and an arched mainspring housing. I also added later style sights. Original GI sights are pretty much useless for anyone over the age of forty. I'm happy with it and don't have a lot of coin wrapped up.
Springfield. Remington, CZ, Colt, and Auto Ordnance, to name a few, have all put out a GI clone, or something very close to it. |
