I'm looking to get a "mid-level", read RIA, Para up to $900 MSRP range, 1911 in 45.

Looking for something for use mostly at the range with an Osprey 45. I don't mind doing a little work with it since I have to add a threaded barrel anyway but would like something relatively ready to go from the factory.

I've got a RIA 22tcm/9mm combo and am leaning towards one of their Ultra Full size models due to the quality and customer service I have experienced from them in the past.

Any advice or suggestions?

you can get a nice Springfield or colt on a $900 budget, my experience says get the Springfield, but everyone needs a colt...

Rugers can be had for between $600-750.  One of the best values in my opinion, and that will leave you some extra money in your budget to add the threaded barrel.  Mine has been flawless right out of the box.  The only time it's jammed has been on my reloads, and that was my fault, not the gun's.

Take a look at the RIA upgraded models and the Ruger both very nice 1911s. I had a RIA 1911 basic model with adjustable sights and gave in to my son in law when he retired from the Army after 21.5 years.  He just shot it a couple of weeks ago, 4 years after I gave it to him,  and loves it.  If you're going to get it for CCW get the commander sized model, 4" or 4.25" barrels. They are easier to carry. If weights an issue get a alloy/light weight frame model.

A midgrade SA loaded with a fitted BAR-STO barrel will be your best bet.

Remington R1 Enhanced w/ threaded barrel? I have the Enhanced non threaded - has been flawless, I like it enough that I have the threaded version on layaway now as well. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for all the suggestions, my original post was a little misleading with the price range. I was looking to stay in the $500-$700 range after .mil discounts.

That being said, all of the suggestions still fall in there so I will look into them.

I've had a RIA GI for a few years and love it. I'm sure one of their upgrade models would serve you well.

I used to have a Ruger 1911 and it was fantastic too. Used to cause I gave it to my son-in-law when he moved my daughter and granddaughter to Georgia. He/they needed something more than her Ruger LC9. I can comfortably recommend a Ruger.

I'm going to make a controversial recommendation here...

I say this owning probably around 25 or so 1911s in various sizes and manufacturers from Norinco to Wilson and am an admitted Colt fan boy. That being said, look at the ATI!

They used to call it the Thunderbolt model but I think they changed the name now and offer it in a threaded barrel in government and commander length.

I loved my non-threaded 5" and only sold it as it was so similar to my MC Operator I couldn't justify keeping both.

For your budget, I'd look at the Springfield offerings. If you want to spend a little less, look at the Rugers.

It sounds like you qualify for Sig's IOP program.

The Sig 1911s offer a lot of bang for the buck- no superfluous stuff like FLGR or ambi safety.  Those of us that own and shoot them love them.

Thanks for the link, I do qualify and that $700-900 MSRP usually nets me in the $500-700 range that I'm looking to spend.

Currently looking at the RIA Ultra FS for $500 otd.
However, the Sig 1911 Tacops TB has definitely got my attention.

Still fairly new to the 1911, like you, had to stick to a certain budget on each one. That said, I have a few now, two Taurus PT1911's, a RIA Tac Ultra Mid-size, and the latest an ATI with the threaded barrel, mid-size.

The Taurus's have the most features of them; front checkering, trigger-guard checkering, throatedd, polished, flared-expanded ejection port, adjustable trigger.  Have not had an issue out my original purchase, came across the two-tone verison and picked it up as well.

RIA, wanted a mid-size for carry; Taurus doesn't offer one to my knowledge.  Local store had a few full size RIA, checked them out, was impressed for the price point and picked it up.  The only thing it lacks that the Taurus's have are trigger-guard checkering, however, it did come with VZ grips and fiber-optic front post.  Fit and finish is the best of all of mine.  Swallows anything in .45ACP I ask of it.

ATI; guilty pleasure, really wanted a threaded barrel for the home front.  The price and the barrel are all it really has going for it.  Beaver tail will not come close to flush, works, just uncomfortable to me. No front checkering of any kind and the worst trigger of my lot. Also had to have the feed ramp and barrel polished so it would reliably feed FMJ.  Still a good "starting point" for the price but the least feature ridden of what I have.

One day an Ed Brown will be mine!

That's unfortunate, I had an early ""Thunderbolt" model and really liked it. The fit and finish was nice and my only real complaint was the rail was really tight, Only got rid of it because of the MC Operator and it being so similar.

Sig makes a few options with the threaded barrel but my only gripe with sig is that it seems there isn't much interchangeability with standard 1911 parts.

I had one and it worked fine. I was never sold on it though. I didn't really like the XO finish and the trigger was sticky. It was also pretty particular with magazines.

I upgraded to a TRP since then....

OP - I'd suggest looking into a Springfield. I think you can pick up a Loaded Parkerized or Range Officer in your price range. Both good shooters.

Just means its the "project gun"; just need help finding a reputable pistol-smith, no-one here locally can give anyone, S.E./MO. Would like to have the barrel throated, the beavertail flush-fit, new trigger and have the ejection port on the slide "massaged", technical term eluding me at the moment.  I already added Magpul grips, Bill Wilson extended magazine well, front checkering and Streamlight TRL-4.  Could be worse; it could have been a Llama.

Right now I own three.

Springer Range Officer.  Got it for mid 700 range.
Ruger Commander.  600 ish
RIA 1911.  Stock model I modified into a GI clone.  400 ish.

They all work well.  The RO may be the most accurate pistol I own.  The Commander is part of my carry rotation.

Owned a Taurus 1911 in the past.  I had no complaints with it.  Accurate, decent trigger, lot of features for the money.  Sold it to finance the RO.

I'm in the same boat, except I'm in Cali.

My first choice is a Kimber Stainless II. Has all the bells/whistles, minus night sights.

Runner up if I could get one here is the Ruger SR1911. Only difference being - no FLGR.
