Has anyone done a .460 conversion to their 1911? Pros? Cons?
I've been considering doing this for a while and was wondering if it's worth doing. |

I have been eye balling that cartridge for a while now, and my SA 1911 Range Officer keeps looking at me funny. I want to shoot the cartridge before I decide, as I might prefer it in a Glock 21...which would mean I would have to buy one, the R.O. I already have, but I hesitate to use it. Only because it shoots so well, i'm not sure I want to touch it. And then there's the capacity arguement, it has NEAR .41mag power 7+1 in a 1911 But in the Glock the advantage over a .41mag revolver grows a lot larger due to the extra capacity, you start talking about some pretty darn serious fire power from a semi auto platform. (10mm eat your heart out)
I guess it depends on use. If I were hunting say a deer, I would prefer the 1911, if I were hunting say hog, I would want the extra capacity of the Glock 21...wish they had a conversion for the Glock 30s...(Then I wouldn't need to buy the 21...would likely be some intense recoil though on a 30S) |

I don't hunt, plus living in Socialist People's Communism of NJ we aren't allowed to hunt with handguns. I'd just be shooting paper. I already reload for .45ACP so it'd be a fairly easy transition to .460 Rowland.
I tried to send an email to Clark Customs but their email is all fucky and won't actually send. It just sits in my outbox and send errors. I'll try calling them tomorrow to get some more information. |

Biggest question is what do you want to use it for?
A 45 Super upgrade to a well made steel frame gun (which is essentially just springs) is much more cost effective than fitting a new barrel, bushing, and compensator. I run 45 Super out of a cheap ass SA milspec with just a shock buff and spring upgrade. |

I don't hunt, even if I did, can't use a pistol in the socialist state of NJ as far as I know. |

Called Clark and asked some questions about the conversion. It's not recommended for my gun; because in their words, "It's not recommended on some of the cheaper steel pistols." I have a Taurus PT1911AR. I'd rather not risk blowing my gun up. The new US made Springfields in all steel should hold up. I think the hot gun detractors don't like the Turkish, Filipino, and Brazilian guns... but RIA makes 10mm these days, so I question the validity of that statement. |

Except I don't have a Colt, US made Springfield or any of the ones they list as "approved". I'm a little disappointed because I really wanted to do the .460 conversion but not at the expense of my gun. If I had a disposable income and could easily replace my gun I'd do it in a heartbeat. As much as all the hate Taurus gets it was the first gun I ever bought and it's been a great shooting gun. Bought it used in May of 2014 it was built in March of 2008; same month and year I was married. |

We recommend many high-quality, modern 1911-style pistols and have a few requirements to help insure you a successful conversion.
Requirements Fully heat-treated slide, with a Rockwell-C hardness of 36 or better, (not spot treated, as specified by the U.S. military during World War II and by many bargain 1911’s today) Standard barrel bushing Standard feed ramp No “fully ramped” or “bull Barrel” configurations please Some 1911’s that are suitable for conversion include: Springfield Armory, Kimber, Colt, Remington, Ruger, Para Ordnance Expert, Norinco, Smith & Wesson, and Sig Sauer, Browning.Colt Government Model, Colt A1 Government, Colt Gold Cup Government, Colt Gold Cup Commander, Colt Enhanced 1911 Government, Colt Enhanced 1911 Commander, Kimber Government, Norinco Government, Springfield Armory A1 Government. Some 1911's that we do not recommend include: Any very old 1911 or “bargain” modern WW II "GI", (except for the modern Springfield Armory GI model ... we like the Springfield GI model ), Llama, AMT, Charles Daly or "GI", Rock Island Armory, Auto Ordnance, Israeli Arms, International, Essex, Taurus, Remington-Rand, or ATM. How heavily invested in that Taurus are you? Maybe a trade for a Springfield GI, Kimber Custom II or Ruger. (if you can find a willing trade partner). Good Luck! |

It was the first gun I bought but it is after all only a tool. I'll look into a possible trade in on a real 1911. |

I do. Did you have a question? Quoted:

I've been eyeing one of these conversions as well. Does anyone in this thread handload that round? I do. Did you have a question? Yes. I see a number of published loadings for 230gr bullets - and Hornady offers both FMJ-RN and cannelured XTPs in that weight. Is there much of a change between the two in terms of a thrown amount of powder? Another: In many of those loadings, I rarely see start and max charge values - only a median load. What's been your experience with working a load up from such data? One which has me intrigued is a published 13gr (IiRC..) loading of Power Pistol under a 230gr hardball. Velocity around 1300fps at the muzzle and a group size of just over an inch at 25yds. Thus, my curiosity about starting charges and so forth. |

I am looking at this cartridge as well. I have a Springfield that is perfect for the conversion.
My new property has several bear that have been spotted along with hog and what I believe to be a Panther or Mountain Lion . ( only seen tracks that were slightly larger than my palm) I'm not really concerned but on the off chance I needed something this seems like a great choice. I already load for .45acp and have everything but the brass to reload. Factory ammo is $$$ but isn't hard to find. How is the recoil compared to the 10mm in a 1911? I'm not really concerned but it would be nice if my wife could handle it |

Sounds damn near like a rifle, and kind of took all the fun out of my Delta Elite. |
