Yea, I'm pretty excited about this. Just did some horse trading and ended up with a brand new Springfield MC Operator.

Now, I just need holster and light recommendations and I'll be set.  I don't think the factory OWB holster will fit the bill.

Great purchase.
Light-wise, I run Surefire X300s on my Springfield rail guns. Worth the extra $.
As far as holster recommendations, that would depend on your use. General use, duty use, concealed carry, what?

I would be conceal carrying it and using it in classes/IDPA/USPSA competitions to let it see some hard use.

Brandi, it is my 3rd 1911, but the first two are extremely entry level STI Spartans I use in IDPA, USPSA, and 3 Gun some.

Light?  I'd recommend the Surefire X300 or X300 ultra.  Been using Surefire weapon lights for a long time starting in the late 90s with the 310r 3v pistol light.   They hold up very well and their customer service has been very good when I managed to break one of their lights.

Funny, I know a lot of shooters from Huntsville.  However, I'll be shooting at a local FOP range tomorrow.

I usually shoot competitions at Rocket City Practical Shooters in Grant, which is not too far from Huntsville headed on 72 towards Scottsboro.  That range has another name, Cavern Cove.

Ok, shot it for 266 rounds today.  I used the 2 SA 7rd mags, the MecGar 8rd mag from the STI Spartan, and my 5 Cobra mags.

On the next to last round out of the 6th mag out of it (seen below, Cobra mag #3) I had the only stoppage it experienced.  It was a feeding failure from the 5th round out of that mag and I took a picture of.  After a tap and rack, it did go bang.

Didn't do any accuracy work, just did both hands, strong hand, weak hand, and then some stoppage drills my buddy brought back from his Tactical Response class Yeager taught.  Backed up to 50 yards and was consistently hitting the metal torso targets with three misses out of 5 mags to end the day.

There was a fire fight!

Took it out tonight after the sun went down to do some low light target identification and weapon manipulation with the TLR-1S attached onto it.

Very nice time. No malfunctions, night sights are bright, it seems that night shooting is very different and requires more thinking than day time shooting.

Beautiful.

While I love the blued with checkered walnut grip type 1911's, there is just something sexy about the no-frills, durable finish with pachmeyr grips 1911.  I think they are great looking guns, and it is pretty much what I want my Colt to be once I get around to having it worked on.

Ok, so I'm going to have just a little mini-range log type thing going if y'all wouldn't mind.

Personal feelings on this pistol.  I traded an HK USP Expert in .40 S&W for it.  I enjoyed shooting that pistol, but magazines were stupid expensive, holsters had to be specially made, special light if I wanted to put a light on it due to the proprietary HK rail.  That was a grail gun for lots of people, but I think this pistol is the cat's pajamas.  Trigger is slightly better, I don't have to drop a few hundred on sights, mags are plentiful, light was easy to get, holsters are abundant.  Minus the trigger, this is a better platform head and shoulders above that huge Expert.  I don't have sellers remorse yet, and don't expect I will.

So far I've had this pistol for about 2 1/2 weeks and I've put almost half a case through it, 469 to be exact, counting tonight's range trip.  I've had 2 FTFeeds both caused by what I believe as a limp wrist, one of Monarch, one with Critical Duty.  Each was cleared with a tap, rack, and then went bang.

I've been using Brian Enos's Slide Glide as the lube.  Light application on the rails and contact points.

Just got in a 50rd box of both HST and Gold Dot to test out before carrying the MCO. I'll be testing them out after shooting a practical/tactical 3 gun competition Saturday. Should be putting another 100 or so through the pistol and whichever AR I take plus another 50-75 of birdshot through the VersaMax.

I'll update some time this weekend with how it ran. It's been through about 150 rounds since the last cleaning, and I'll probably not clean it before Saturday to see if it gets finicky when it is a little dirty.

Could you do an extractor test for us?

http://modernserviceweapons.com/?p=131

The test is simple: fire a prescribed number of rounds through the pistol without a magazine inserted.

In the 10-8 1911 Function test, we shoot 16 rounds this way. Eight are fired two handed and eight more are fired strong hand only.

The empty cases must properly eject between 2 o’clock and 5 o’clock. If any cases go forward, to the left, stovepipe, into your face, or fall through the magazine well, the pistol has failed this test.
5/22/2015 12:23:03 AM EDT
[#33]
Sure. I'll sneak to the range a little early and record my findings.
5/23/2015 7:03:41 AM EDT
[#34]
Take the slide off and slip a loaded round under the extractor. It should hold the round horizontilly with the nose of the round tipping down about 30 degrees, yet still hold the round when you give it a light shake.
If it passes this test, My next two thoughts are. The mags. Yes not every 1911 likes every brand of mags.
Or the ammo needs to be hotter. I find Winchester White box which is good ammo and I have shot a ton of it is alittle cooler than gi ball. So some times I get a faliure to feed the last round out of the mag on acouple of my guns. You might try a differant brand of ammo.
Federal American Eagle is easy to find and is loaded up to full speed.
Slide guide might also be alittle thick for lube. Some 1911's like grease and others are fine with just a good CLP oil.

Hossolo, the pistol passed the test with the FMJs. I didn't use the hollow points for the test. I filled a few of the mags I'm planning on carrying with each and they fed and shot well, went bang every time.

T-TAC, it passed your test as well.

I now firmly believe that I was limp wristing on those two FTFeeds. The pistol shot very well today. Finished just outside of the top ten, not a flaw with firearm functioning, just a mental mistake that cost me. It definitely received tons of compliments from the squad mates. I'll try to figure exact round count tomorrow.

ETA: match was lighter on the pistol than I thought. Shot 75 rounds between the match, test, and hollow points.

IIRC the test shouldn't matter with the type of bullet, since it'a already in the chamber. The important part is that the magazine is OUT and you're still getting consistent ejection.

Thanks for updating!

Thanks for informing me about the test.  I'm actually CCing it today, full of Gold Dots with a TLR-1S in a holster made by goodmedicine.

As far as adding a magwell or changing grips, the pach wrap-around felt good in my hands yesterday at the match.  I didn't have any fumbled reloads.  For the time being I'll keep it set-up as is.

CC is an excellent range. You have no excuse to not go being half an hour away. Check out the match schedule. The May 3 gun match was moved to this coming Saturday due to the Miculeks coming earlier this month to hold Babes with Bullets.

Based on your picture, my first thought was that you have a magazine issue. However, Tripp mags are solid. I guess that doesn't mean they couldn't be the issue here though.

You said you had a second failure, was it with the same mag?  I'd mark that mag and see if you get the issue again with that same mag. If so, I'd toss the mag, even if it is a Tripp. Or you could get a new spring for it and try to extend its life. Good tubes can last a while, but even they will eventually spread enough at the lip that you have to toss them.
5/25/2015 10:15:49 PM EDT
[#45]
Glad you like the MC. I love mine. It's a little picky with mags, but I've found the Springfield and Wilson ones are usually flawless.
5/26/2015 8:59:51 PM EDT
[#46]
Wilson, it was a new Wilson 47D magazine that I had the second problem with. It was during a night range session when the last round of that Critical Duty didn't feed. I'm fairly certain that I did limp wrist as I've used both the Tripp and Wilson mags during the competition and a few other range sessions without a failure.

Sometimes I have two Tripp mags give me a problem not ejecting after hitting the mag release. They are scratched up a bit due to being the competition 1911's mags so they've been dropped on gravel lots.

Yes, they do look good. I think the new version has one of the Operators in that dirty olive color pattern.

I just ordered a few things for mine. I ended up going with a Smith and Alexander magwell with Wilson Combat internals and a 19# Wolff spring. And since I wanted to get my A2 build up and running I ordered a set of the MagPul TSP grips in black instead of a set of VZ grips. Hope everything comes in by Friday so I can function check before the Alabama HTF meetup this coming weekend.
