Colt Gold Cup series 70   The slide stop lever backed out yesterday while shooting...what is causing this...and how do I fix it?

There's only three reasons a slide lock would become disengaged while shooting that I can think of.

First, and hopefully so, because it's the cheapest would be the slide stop itself.  It has a cut and a shoulder which keep if affixed to the slide, if it's gotten worn down or broken off it would allow it to come out.

Secondly the slide lock plunger or stem rides in the barrel link, check to see that everything is as it should be in that area.

Thirdly and I hope it isn't the case, check to see if the cut in the slide has become oversized and not able to retain the slide lock.

ETA  I had a slide stop break once on an series 70, I replaced it with a Wilson bullet proof slide stop and never looked back.

JUST ADD A DETENT TO CURRENT SLIDE STOP.

The Colt slide stop tends to have the lug snap off.
