I have a kimber warrior, para warthog and colt m1991a , but kind of want something higher end.  I was thinking in the range of $2-3K but I'm not real sure they are worth the money.  I really only want a good shooting/reliable 1911, dont care too much if its custom, or has fancy grips.  Id like to take it shooting at bowling pins, steel plate shoots etc.

Its probably a diminishing return, the more money you spend the less you really get.  Anyone have any ideas on what the right amount of money/value is the good ratio in the 1911 world?

Pretty hard to beat the Les Baer line of 1911s for value.  For a couple of K, you can get a pretty nice 1911 with unbeatable accuracy (at any price).

The Dan Wesson Valor is at a good price point for what you want.

I found a guy selling a Les Baer Premier II for $1800.  He says its only been shot 50 times, and its like new in box.  Looking on gun broker, seems like you can get new ones for his asking price.  Anyone know what a used one would be worth?

Sort of hard to say. Would have to closely inspect for wear, idiot mark, etc. If it truly is that little used, I'd offer $150 less.

If I could (I couldn't) I would hold out for one of the Rock River Arms Carry pistols.

Like you, I was looking for the sweet spot for a higher end 1911 while also considering diminishing returns.  It's understood that you can pretty much spend as much as you want in 1911 land, so how slick do you want to go and how much does it mean to you.

For me, I landed in the land of Wiley Clapp Colts.  They had the features I wanted - series 70 guns, excellent fit and finish, front strap checkering, gold bead front sights / black rear, no front cocking serrations.  They shoot great, excellent triggers, and are sexy as hell.

I'd spec'd out a Wilson Combat when I came across these.  I noticed that I could get two Wiley Clapp Colts (a government and a CCO) and 3000 rounds of 45acp ball for the cost of the Wilson.  I have no doubt that the Wilson would have been "nicer" than my Colts, but I'm very happy with my decision.

The WC Colts can be had new for $1300ish.

Or you could go with a nice Colt Gold Cup and have money left over for and customizing or fine tuning that you could dream of. I loved mine right out of the box though. Accurate, reliable and a classic that will never go out of style.

Last one I bought, paid $1400 for it.   It was an older one but it was somewhere between excellent and immaculate condition.

Definitely.  I'm a big fan of the Baers.  I think this is my fourth one.  I've owned Wilson, Brown and others but it's hard to beat Baers for the price.

If you are not in a hurry, and you have cash on hand, you can find older semi-customs for really good prices.

I have seen a couple of Wilson CQB's in excellent shape go for $2k or less recently, Baer's for $1,500 or so.

Few people can afford the ammo it would take to put any appreciable wear on them.
