The trigger on my 1911 is loose up and down and side to side. Anything I can do to fix this besides having a smith fit a new trigger? Is this a problem? Thanks.

not a problem as the 1911 trigger "floats", only fix is a new oversize trigger then file to fit. You may be able to add material to your trigger.

Actually, it depends a bit on how loose "loose" is.
As stated, the trigger bow "floats" in channels cut into the inside of the frame. It has to have some looseness in order to move.  But too much movement--a really sloppy fit--will, at best, make your trigger feel like crap.

Unfortunately, the only real fix is to replace the trigger--assuming the trigger bow ways (or channels or grooves or whatever you want to call them) are within spec.  If someone got in there with files and stones, they could have enlarged the ways while trying to polish them.

There is no reason you can't procure and install an oversize trigger yourself.  Please post pictures and information on your progress.

Had a loose trigger in a S&W 1911, thing would jingle around while I was carrying it.  A $20 solid trigger from Cylinder & Slide fit right in yet much tighter.
