I've been looking at Commanders for a while now for my 2nd 1911 (1st is in my avatar) and I have settled on the blued 1991 Commander, model O4691. Is there anything I should know about this particular pistol? Is the 1991 a good gun? Thanks.

Edit-Is the trigger on the 1991 the same length as on my Loaded? My gun has a long 3 hole trigger.

I like mine a lot--cant answer the trigger question.

If it is not it is an easy under 40 fix.

I've been looking at the Harrison medium length triggers, is it easy to fit one yourself?

A few here regard the 1991s as their favorites. If I saw one that I wanted, I wouldn't hesitate. Hell, I almost picked one up last year.

new or used?

They should have a solid nylon long trigger.

No offense, but after your thread with the MSH...if you want a different trigger, I'd find a competent smith.

Not for you.

I have a 1991A1 that I bought new about 2 years ago. It is unmodified and is my every day carry pistol. I have fired well over 1000 rds through it with zero stoppages or malfunctions. It is not a match grade shooter, but I didn't pay match grade shooter prices for it either. 4 inches @ 25 yrds will get the job done if I ever need to use it to defend myself or others.

Well, actually, it is modified. I put soft rubber grip stocks on it instead of the rosewood with which it was originally fitted. Other than that, she is bone stock.

I bought this Colt 1991a1 Compact a few years ago, added the grip safety, trigger, and grips.  Probably shot around 200 rounds through it so far with no issues.  It's one of my carry guns.

I wore a 1991 commander as my carry gun for a couple years until I saved up enough for my TRP. Sent mine to Novak for sights and I was very happy with it. Now after being spoiled by a Nighthawk for 2 years the poor girl rarely leaves her hide-a-gun spot.

I've had a stainless 1991 commander for 10 years and other than the sights I don't have any complaints. I'd like to swap out the main spring housing trigger and sights one day, but it shoots reliably as is.

Don't forget to beat on it with a hammer if you have a malfunction, that ALWAYS works , right? .

They're good shooters and a great platform for custom builds.  The Trigger and MSH are Nylon or they were on the older guns (ORM's).  Here is mine that has had some custom work.

Carried mine for years before I upgraded to a lightweight frame.

Downsides:
Tenon front sight.  That limits your options if you want to replace it, and finding a smith who is willing to stake a tenon is well night impossible these days.  Of course, anyone with a bridgepiort is happy to cut a dovetail.
Series 80, so slightly worse trigger than one free of such silliness.
Plastic Trigger Shoe
Plastic MSH.
Steel frame, so heavy for a carry gun.

I've never actually seen any issue with the plastic MSH, they are lightweight and work.  Here is my Officer (which Colt called a Compact)

I have a 1991 Commander that I love a lot, but the only parts on it that are stock are the series 80 parts, and the frame and slide. And maybe some pins.

I can tell you that they make great base gun builds.
