I picked up a RIA 1911 the other day. I really wanted a silver 1911 but I got a great deal on this one that is black. My question i guess is there a way to buff the paint off down to bare metal? May be a dumb move but any thoughts or ideas? Thanks guys

You could polish it down to the bare metal, but then you would have to keep it well oiled to avoid rust and corrosion.

Plus, it is probably a cast frame, and you might discover a flaw if you polish it very much.

Nickel, especially electroless nickel, or hard chrome might be the finish that you would like, but they are rather expensive for a RIA.

There are paints that are gray or silver.  I haven't used any, and have only seen pictures.  I have painted pistols, but only in darker colors.

Gun-Kote and Duracoat can be applied with an airbrush, the GUn-Kote is tougher, but requires baking.

Hope this helps.

I'd be willing to buy it off you for $50 after you realize it's a rust magnet from polishing off the parkerizing

It's an RIA, I wouldn't go as far as saying polishing a turd but it is what it is- a reliable budget 1911 and you should probably accept it for what it is.  If you went as far as sending it out for a real finish you'd probably be better off selling it and using the finish money to just buy a Remington or something.

Yeah I figured so. Just thought I would see since there seems to be some crazy guys here that do some pretty impressive stuff with guns. Thanks!

Disassemble it yourself. Have it bead blasted. May not need to be blasted ...Cerakote your choice of color. Reassemble. Have fun.

The RIA's have a well earned reputation for reliability and durability. You're not into it for big $$, may as well use it as a learning tool. It's not an irreplaceable heirloom.

You will be buying more 1911's. Use the RIA to 'get acquainted' with working parts and metal finishing.

Have it Cerakoted silver for around $100. Removing the finish will leave the metal unprotected against rust and corrosion. Congrats on the new 1911 by the way.

Before they started offeringng them factory, there was somebody on the kel-tec site that ran a service hard chroming their slides, so you wouldn't be guilty of polishing the biggest turd.

HC would probably get you where you want to be, in the best shape.
