Hey guys I'm looking to get my first 1911. It will be my everyday carry so I was looking in the $700 and under range. I read good reviews about the Remington and the Ruger, so those are my two choices thus far. With reliability and craftsmanship about par from my research I'm down to looks. I'm not a fan of the Ruger being all stainless from a cosmetics stand point, but I really like the GI look of the remington. Just wanted to see if anybody else had info on these two or if their are other options I should consider? I'm still wet behind the ears when it comes to 1911's so I thought I'd ask the pros. P.S. My first choices were a performance center S&W or a Kimber Grand Raptor, but I can't justify the wear and tear on a ~$1500 1911.  Someday I will have them both though

Allow me to opine an option towards Springfield Armory in your price range. It will be better made & have better resale value that the others.

If you are looking for a sub $700 1911 for edc then you are shit out of luck.  You will be better served with something you can understand, like a Glock.

I have a Springfield Armory RO and like it a lot, paid a little more than 800 for it with tax.

People carry Rock Islands every day, if you test your gun to make sure it works right, i wouldnt have a problem trusting it.

What people?  I question their intelligence.  If you can't afford a Colt and the work to make it run right or a Wilson or Nighthawk or something comparable then this platform is nothing but a toy.  A substandard 1911 is certainly not a good choice for EDC.

Lmao and if I can't afford a Rolls Royce I should buy a Prius because my kids will be safer? And for what it's worth I can get the Ruger for $600 at my LGS which is tempting but he doesn't carry the Remington so I can't get a deal on that.

My $500 pre series II Kimber disagrees with you. It has seen years of EDC and countless IDPA and USPSA matches. It does support a new slide thanks to a double charge around the 13,000 mark all that was needed was a new magazine and it was back in use.

OP I would go with the Rugger over the Rem and a SA Loadded with a extractor, recoil spring, change over those 2.

Disagree all you like.  Kimber is among the very worst offenders.  If you have not experienced several small parts failures, (slide stop, safety, hammer, barrel lugs), then it is because you have replaced those parts or you don't shoot the gun any meaningful amount.

I would recommend anything from Springfield long before I would recommend that abortion from Ruger.

$400 SA Champion has never had a malfunction in a decade that wasn't related to mags, and then only failure to lock, about as minor as it can get and remedied by not using those mags. Zero work required.
Even has BTF like a Glock, must be an indicator of reliability

OP SA Mil-Spec, top notch CS if you need it, and when you get the urge to change things, and you will no matter what you get, you'll have a good foundation.

If it were between the two I would go with the Ruger. I don't have one in 1911 but I have 22 yr old P90 with over 10,000 rounds thru it and have never had a problem with it.

I personally love the look of the Number but  wouldn't buy one.

Springfield for me. I've got a Champion Operator and love it.

I'd pony up another hundred or so and get a Springfield RO. It's flat out the best bang for your buck. Read a few threads here, it's suggest a lot. Take a look at a GI style pistol and one with some upgrades like an RO. A beavertail and better sights make a huge difference. Harrison has some fine sights for the RO. I can't hotlink on a phone but a quick Google search will give you the link.

I have a Ruger 1911 and I absolutely love it. I have carried and shot it frequently, and have never had any issues.

Springfield.  Mine has been going strong for three years, has not had a single part replaced, even mim parts are still going strong, not a heavy use gun but probibaly 2k down the tube.  She is as smooth as silk and twice as sturdy as she is smooth.  I got a SS Mil-spec with NM prefix.  I paid $650 for mine in 2011.

My 2 cents: for the price you get a decent product backed by an excellent company with the Spartan sold by STI.  The internals are STI and the rest of the gun is Armscor, but each goes through STI's QC.  They are now offering 3, 4, and 5 in barrel lengths.

If you couldn't find a Colt 1991, then go Springfield. It's nothing more than my opinion, but for me, those two have the track record over Ruger and Remington in the 1911 scene. I've also got plenty of experience with those two companies.

Of those two I would go for the Ruger. I don't own one, but have shot one and it shot well. Two guys I shoot with have been using them for USPSA and IDPA shooting. I prefer an RIA in that price range, I shot 2,000 rounds in the first eight weeks of owning mine, no issues.

I don't really care for the sights, grip safety, or thumb safety on the Remington I saw. They look cool, but I'm not a fan of those on a shooter.
