I finally decided to replace my Browning High Power 9mm with the STI 2011 4.0 Tactical Light 9mm. After lubricating the STR lightly, I put 400 rounds through it. I used 7 different brands of ammunition in the following order:

50 rounds of Lawman Speer 124GR TMJ

50 rounds of Winchester 124GR FMJ

50 rounds of Federal Premium 98GR Frangible RHT

50 rounds of Blazer Brass 115GR FMJ

50 rounds of Geco 124GR FMJ

50 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 115GR FMJ

100 rounds of Fiocchi 115GR FMJ

Once with the Winchester and twice with the Fiocchi I had the following identical failure:

Approximately half way through the magazine, the STI would load a new round, but the slide got “stuck in motion” and did not complete the cycle.

Do I have a problem?

Do I need to send the 2011 4.0 Tactical Light back to STI?

Please advise.

Did you feed everything through the same magazine? The vast majority of 1911 malfunctions are magazine or extractor related.
Just as an aside, I have 2 COLT government models that I bought NIB that have about 1000 rds though each with not a single misfeed or malfunction. The ammo is a mixture of factory and hand loads as well as a mixture of quality and knock off magazines. (Yes, it is irrelevant. I just wanted to brag a little  )

I f it was a NIB gun, I would have lubricated it 'liberally'.

Just my .02 cents.

From what I understand the 2011 mags can be a little finiky and sometimes require tuning.
You might find info on the 1911 forum, STI sub forum as well.

I consulted with STI before I took my 2011 4.0 Tactical Light 9mm out for the first time. Due to the cold weather they recommended that I lubricate my new 2011 lightly.

More than likely extractor too tight, not radiused/polished correctly, weak recoil spring.

Was the extractor around the rim, or behind it?  Could be weak mag springs.

Could ne a combination of all those things or more.

There's some good 2011 guys here who will weigh in shortly.

Sounds like you got a good one, welcome to 2011s.

My vote is for the mags needing some help.

I'd say having only 3 malfunctions in the first 400 rounds in a new STI is a pretty good feat

If you have access to a buddy with mags you can try I'd do that before blaming the gun.

Most 1911s like to be lubed well
Regardless of the weather , find ammo that makes your gun function and buy that ammo ..
Shoot ammo that works until you get about 500-600 rounds to break in a little

But mags are most likely the issue

When the slide stops short when going into battery, where is it?  1/4" from going into battery or further out?   Having the correct spring tension in 9mm 1911s is more critical since there is a lot less recoil energy to move the slide back.

At this point, I would not be concerned. More than likely you needed more oil on the rails. Sometimes this problem is from the magazine but I would just clean well and oil.
