After my divorce I sold my early Kimber Pro Carry when I was cash strapped.   Looking to replace it after all these years.  What sub $1200 gun do you guys suggest. How dows Kimber rank with DW, Remingtion, Ruger, Sig Etc these days?  Not looking for a basic gun and want the sights, updrages of a carry gun.  What to buy????

Colt LW XSE Commander if you want to carry it.

Steel version if you don't

I don't think you will find a DW in your price range, and I'd rather have a Colt than the others you listed.

I have had to modify every Colt I have owned to make it run reliably and shoot tight..........including the Commander I had.

You might hit the gunshows for an older Commander.  My LW Commander dates from around 1990?
I bought it at a gunstore in 1997.  Personally I prefer the look of these enhanced Commanders over the new versions.
I'm pretty sure Colt made them with steel frames too.
There are a few 1991A1 round top Commanders out there.  They are a good place to start if you want to customize it to your liking.

Mines a little used but it still runs like a champ

Liking the LW Colt Commander and the Kimber Pro Carry will always have a soft spot in my heart.  Are new Kimbers as good as 2000-02 Kimbers?

Not at all in my experiences. I know three people who have them, only one was really nice, and it was a series 1.

Boy, that's a loaded question around here. It tends to attract the simple-minded "Kimber sucks!" crowd.
Having said that, though, Kimber's guns over the past decade or so have not be as well reviewed as their earlier ones.  Moreover, there have been a lot of reports of poor customer service, which would play a role in my decision to buy a brand new gun.

I have only one Kimber--an older Pro Carry HD (the steel version of the Pro Carry)--and it's been an outstanding pistol.  But I bought it used, with no expectation of ever using customer service even if I had problems.

If you liked your Pro Carry and happen to find another one with few rounds through it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
A "series II" gun...well, you might be taking more of a gamble.  That's not to say it'll be bad--many people have been very happy with their series II guns.  But hands-on inspection and a test-fire might not be a bad idea.

Wasn't the gen II the one with the external extractor?  NO WAY..   One issue I have with the Sigs but hear they work well.. I'll keep an eye out for a Colt LW or Pro carry early used.  Any others I should look for?  Any new guns GTG and less than $1200?

I would add a couple hundred more and get the Dan Wesson Guardian.

Dan Wesson is above all those that you list. If it's in your budget, I would would go with a DW (from the ones you listed).  I would also seriously look at STI. They make several options in your price range. I have a Trojan and it shoots better than my TRP and Ruger SR1911. The STI was fit better and had a better trigger than both.

I just picked up an STI Ranger II last week, new with Straight 8 sights for $1135.00
Originally I was looking for a SA Champion Operator, but had no luck finding one, except an overpriced one on gunbroker after looking for months.
I  wanted  a Comander size 1911 that was GTG out of the box, well I did some homework on the STI's and found they had excellent feedback, both the gun's themselves and their customer service.
I called STI and spoke with customer service prior to placing my order and was very satisfied, there was no trouble getting through (actual people no electronic BS)
Not only the guns, but all the parts except pins and springs are made by STI in Texas.
The gun is very well fitted and tight, you notice this immediately, then during disassembly and reassembly there's no excess movement anywhere but it cycles beautifully,
the trigger was 4.5lb out of the box with very little take up, very clean break and very little over travel...maybe 2.5mm travel overall, I would think it will improve a bit on it's own.
I ran several hundred flawless rounds through it yesterday, it's accuracy is well beyond mine for sure.
So far, IMHO this is a bargin and a half ...no regrets what so ever

The first 4 magazines, I started out low to the left

Maybe in Texas, up here those sell for $1400-1600 all day. A quick search of Gunbroker didn't turn up any under $1400.

I would look at STI if I was you, good value.

OK that STI gave me a semi...  Very nice...  Is the build quality better than a kimber?

Give the Lightweight Champion Operator a try. I've been satisfied with mine and carry it every day.

Back when I worked at a local gun shop and got the Kimber built to my specs (Kimber just started and wanted to see dealers carrying their product), I wanted a Springfield champion for a 2nd 1911. Back then they were built in Brazil and I heard they weren't that accurate. Is that still true??  I always thought they looked great.

I ordered my S&W PC 1911 from Buds for $1240, five days before Christmas.
A good alternative option for $1133: S&W 1911 E-Series bobtail

Look at a Colt Wiley Clapp Commander. Series 70 internals, good checkering on front strap, etc...I still think these are undervalued on the market for what you get...

I guess i will weigh in... I carry a Colt 1991A1 commander i got on ARFCOM for 600.  I fully intend to customize it myself to what I want in a carry 1911. I have never had a problem with it at all.  Most of the guys are right to steer you into "what you want".  At the end of the day it is shooter preference.  My only advice to you is maybe pick up something to build a carry 1911 that was designed for YOU.  It more than likely would end up in the same price range.  Just food for thought.
