I'm looking to get my first 1911 in the near future and these two seem to fit the bill while being pretty close in price. Part of me has always wanted the MC Operator, but the Traditional Tacops seems like it might be a little more gun for the money with the front strap checkering and magwell (features I wish the MC had).
Is there any appreciable difference between these two or should I just flip a coin? Edit: I feel like I should add that I'm local to Springfield so if there were ever any issues I could just drive over there and have them take care of it. |

I have a MC Operator. Spent a little bit of money and replace the ILS with a Ed Brown magwell. My only complaint is Trijicon doesn't make their HD line of sights for it for some reason (front sight cut is wrong size)
I had a Sig scorpion, traded it off. Didn't like the flat trigger, and holster fit was a issue. The Sig 1911s have just enough of a different profile to make it hard to fit |

The Traditional models offered by Sig have a "regular" 1911 slide profile so finding a holster will be a non-issue. |

Why not a TRP OP?
Solves both of your issues with the MC. By the time you put money into the MC to get your magwell, checker the front strap, and have it refinished you are looking at TRP money anyway. ETA:Unless you really want the rail. In that case the TRP Operator comes with other features you may not like. (adjustable sights and a bull barrel) |

The TRP Operator is a little more than I'm wanting to spend at the moment. I definitely want the rail, but the adjustable sights are something I don't need/want.
If I were to get the MC it would be a few years or so before I'd send it off to SACS to it's not like I'd be buying only to turn around and immediately give it back to them. |
| I own a 1st generation MC Op. with the 3/4 cut rail. Its a beast. Its just as tight, just as smooth as my trp. The gun has been flawless and runs like a raped ape. I can cycle a magazine of empty brass through it. I have used their CS as well as their customer service and both have been top notch. |
| There have been some concerns voiced by knowledgable people (such as Hilton Yam) about the geometry of Sigs extractor. The Sig 1911s are nice and I would happily shoot one for fun but if I intended to carry it or use it for personal protection I would trust the Springfield more (once proven). |
| I have a TacOps Traditional. Still new to me. Put 150 rounds thru it last weekend with one failure to seat the round. This was old nasty ammo that was rolling around in the floor of my van. I'm very happy with it. It will have VZ grips soon. The ergos are ok. Never would I ever get another 1911 without front strap checkering... I love the Sigs for that. |
| I have owned a Sig 1911 TacOps (non-traditional) and currently own a MC Operator and from my experience I would get the MC Operator. I really wanted to love my TacOps but it was jam machine. In 500rds I consistently had FTFs no matter the ammo or mag I used. From FMJ to JHPs, standard loads, +P loads in jammed. I tried Chip McCormick, Wilson Combat 47D, USGI, Kimber, and the Sig supplied mags and all failed to feed in the gun. In addition I was getting noticeable bullet setback with any ammo even after just one chambering. I initially thought it was just in need of breaking in, but that didn't work. My buddy (former SF, 1911 smith/armorer, and a firearms instructor) looked at the feed ramp and said it looked fine, but he could try to polish it some to see if it helped, which it did not. Eventually I sold it to someone who knew of my issues wih the gun, but wanted it for their own reasons. I honestly feel I just got a lemon and I know that happens. Also, I did love everything else about the Sig and someday may get another, with hope of a better experience. In regards to my MC Operator, it has been flawless with every mag and ammo I have used. I like the looks and feel of it better than the Sig. I added a Smith and Alexander MSH/Magwell and while I planned on getting the front strap checkered, surprisingly the Pachmayr grips have grown on me and I like them a lot. Ultimately I think you would be happy with either one. |
| No Springfield has ever "wowed" me aesthetically (including the Pro), but they are a known commodity: solid, reliable, and backed by an excellent warranty. Basically, great workhorse guns. Plus, I only trust S&W's external extractor. SIG seems to have many an issue with them. |
