Anyone have any downside to this pistol. I am in the process of trying to find one. I would like the blued version.

I've never owned one, but would like to. I'm a big fan of the 10mm cartridge. I've been looking at Glock 20's and 29's to carry when I'm out in the woods, but wouldn't mind owning a Delta Elite as a range toy.

I've heard of reliability issues when higher power 10mm ammo is used without replacing the recoil spring with a stiffer spring and adding a shock buffer. But, like I said, I don't own one, so the Delta Elite owners will have to chime in on that one.

My Delta Elite is years old, it was one of the first in the "Enhanced" version which among other changes had the frame cut out where the slide stop resides.

Having a dislike for plastic parts in my 1911's I got rid of the dual captive recoil spring and it's plastic guide rod.  I went with a 24' wolff recoil spring and a normal G.I. rod.

I fit a flat bottom EGW firing pin stop, this slows the recoil impulse down by a minisule amount, but helps to prevent frame battering.

I shoot normal full power 10mm loads and reload my own to full power specs. and lower power bullseye loads.

The Colt being what it is, I'm never been too anxious to see how powerful a load I could run through it, that's what Glock 20's are for.

I haven't seen the new generation of Delta Elites, but I'm sure they are quite reliable as OEM.

I have owned several DE's over the years including my first which was a blued first gen 3xxx sn.

I have never had an issue with any of them and just purchased one of the recent issued SS models, I really do like them and the ammo is not that expensive any more.

I have had a blued, stainless, stainless enhanced, blued enhanced and now the new gen stainless.

I had close to 10k rounds through my first DE as I was using it for IPSC in the late 80's

Can they really not handle the hot rounds? How hard would it be to fit a supported chamber barrel to one?

supported chamber just keeps cases from blowing out. it doesn't slow down the wear that insane 10mm loads will do to it. a Glock 20 10mm with a good, fully supported barrel will take loads that will destroy a 10mm 1911. I know this for a fact because I've done it. I build quiet a few custom 1911's for people each year and have seen several times what hot 10mm does to them. my Glock 10mm load is a 215gr lead SWC @ 1425fps. a 1911 shooting those for awhile will eat itself from the inside out. even the 165gr SWC at a bit over 1650fps will chew them up. if you just have to try it anyway, at least use a dual recoil spring setup. it'll take more of the battering out than a single spring will, but it's still not enough for the really hot loads.

People like to hand load the 10mm WAY above SAAMI spec.

The Delta Elite can handle any load on any of the reputable manuals.  Handload it up to 30-06 pressure and bad things can happen.

I've owned the early blued version and recently bought a brand new stainless version. I have bought a few Colts this past year and the quaility of the new Colts may be the best they have ever produced. Much better slide to frame fit. Better barrel bushing fit. Decent trigger pull out of the box. A lot of 1911 for the money.
I'm keeping DE stock for now. The double recoil spring and the rear plastic guide rod are there to cushion the load. I don't know if it gets any better with a steel rear guide rod and heavier recoil spring. You have to remember going to a Heavier recoil spring goes both ways. heavier when the slide comes back, but also heavier and slamming harder going forward.
I shoot lighter loads like Remington 180gr. full metal jacket for range use and put about half a box of Double tap 150 gr. DPX before I go home just to see where it shoots.
For carry ammo Corbon and Double tap are the guys to see.
The Delta Elite is a great gun that almost equals the power of a .41 magnum.

This is good advice, although because of the unsupported chamber there are loads I wouldn't even try in a Delta. OP, if you do go with a Delta, I'd also make sure it has an oversized square bottom firing pin stop properly fit to it.

But if you want to shoot a lot of hot 10mm, I'd go Glock 20.

I have a stainless Delta Gold Cup and like it a lot but have only shot factory loads in it. I wish ammo was more available for it but the price isn't bad when you find it.

Bought mine NIB in June '91. Since then I have upgraded it with a whole store display of aftermarket parts; not because it needed anything to function, but just because I loved the custom look that ALL 1911's seem to come with stock, now. By the way, in all that time it has been flawless with everything from wimpy store-bought loads to my primer-flattening reloads. The only mod I bought to help there was a BarSto barrel with significantly better case support than the stock barrel.

I've come close to pulling the trigger on a DE several times, but I really, really wish they came with a ramped barrel, beavertail, and decent sights.

I bought it used so some other idiot put that idiot mark on it.

Are there any that don't have the idiot mark?  I bought mine NIB, so I can't blame anybody else, I did that to mine.  However, seems like all the used ones have them already.  :-)  It's a bit of a tricky gun to put back together compared to the other ones I have.  I think it was my 3rd time through before I was able to reassemble without scraping it there...

Strangely I have some WW2 guns with the original finish and still lacking the idiot mark. I guess we make bigger idiots now days or something.
