it has been a bunch of years, and my experience was with Colt slides... even replacing the spring plug with a Kings to stop the bushing cracking problem, you are on the edge of reliability with such a short spring compression length... I would suggest staying with a Commander length slide... YMMV

It's been done.  Since it is the butt of the gun that is most difficult to conceal and not the barrel this is a useless conversion.

I should have put in more info , not looking at this for CWP issues but to see if its possible  and from a cost angle

Colt put out a few, dubbed as Lieutenant Commanders.

It's possible but it isn't nearly as good an idea as putting a Commander slide on an Officer's frame.

Auto-Ordnance too.  Called it ZG-51 "Pitbull".

I have a Kimber Custom Compact 1st gen and absolutely love it, one of the best configurations available.

Agreed.  The grip is the hard to hide part.

I've got a proper Colt Commander.  It's easy to hide with a full size frame and no bobtail.  Been doing it for 15+ years.
There are more IWB and OWB holster options for the Commander than I can count.

I'd go that route before a CCO or a 1911 with a slide shorter that 4.25"

"Night Officer" too

... and mine has had the original tritium sights replaced with Novak's, though.

Regarding how it,or an OACP, or a Gov't model carries, the length of the barrel is more apparent than the butt length to me.

Springfield Army attached an Officer length slide to a Commander size frame also.

Ugly and useless imo. As already stated, the butt is the hard part to hide. and if its not for concealed carry, why have a more finicky gun for the range?
Now the other way around, the CCO, is pure sex.

Colt sold one in the '80s called the Silver Stallion.    JD

This is the wonderful thing about 1911's--there's one for every taste!
They're not all suited to MY taste, but to each his own!

+1

I have a Kimber Compact Aluminum that's at least 17 years old.  It has never so much as hiccuped in all that time. It's so light and concealable that I have no excuse not to leave home without it.

If your hands are so big that you need a full size grip, it is better to start with a Commander sized 1911.
Then only go to a shorter slide if you have to.

ETA: CCO size rules the CCW roost.
