I'm picking up a Colt XSE (Stainless Steel O1070XSE) on Friday. I wanted to know what some good upgrades to the gun are. I'm already looking into new black grips, just not sure which ones to get (Thinking black Tactical Diamond G10 VZs). Also I was looking at the different sight options.
These are some of the things I was considering: Shok-Buff® Kit, Full-Size, .45 ACP - Shok-Buffs &18 1/2# Recoil Spring Flat-Wire Recoil Spring Kit, Full-Size .45 ACP - Standard Rod, 17# Recoil Spring (I'll buy Shok Buffs seperate) Shok-Buff® Recoil System, Full-Size - SS Guide Rod, Shok Buffs, Extra Power Firing Pin Spring, Extra Power HD Recoil Spring, Reduced Power Heavy-Duty Recoil Spring The last one says its an instant accuracy/reliability tune-up. I just don't know much about which springs to use and how to keep my gun performing reliably and accurately. Are there any other good upgrades I should be looking at? And I know the classic answer I see is "more ammo" so I'm gonna go ahead and tell everyone now that I make my own so I got that covered guys! |

More ammo.
Your gun is fine the way it is 1911s are not plug and play. Every part pretty much has to be handfit. Now the parts youre talking about are mainly recoil systems and really in no way are going to improve accuracy or reliability. As long as the pistol is reliable as is, do not start throwing parts at it 16# - 18.5# springs are what you are going to want in a full size 1911. I do not use shock buffs so no input there |

Quoted:
Try to refrain from doing anything to the gun until you actually get it in your possession and put a few hundred rounds through it. Don't change stuff that isn't broken. See how the gun shoots and see what you want to change. And if you are going to replace parts, make sure you know how to fit them correctly and have the tools to fit the parts. |

I have an XSE and have run about 800 rounds of reloads and Ranger through it. I have had zero issues so I have only changed the grips. The only other thing that might make a nice update would be replacing the duck foot safety. I, like others, suggest you leave it be and shoot it for a few hundred rounds before messing with anything.
SIDE NOTE: When I got mine it was very common for Colt to ship the XSE with the allen screw very loose on the rear sight. I suggest you check that it is tight before you shoot it. |

I have one XSE--a LW Commander--that I bought second hand. The only work that had been done to it was new sights (Meprolights), but the thing is an very good-shooting pistol. However, non-critical fitment like the gaps around the grip safety are atrocious. I'm going to see if an Ed Brown or Wilson beavertail can be better fitted. Otherise, it will be left alone till time to replace springs.
One note, though--mine is definitely mag-sensitive. I'm running Wilson ETMs and it's been flawless, but I tried and discarded a variety of other mags--includiing ones that work reliably in other Colts--before I settled on these. As everyone else has said, buy ammo and good mags and shoot the heck out of the thing before making a bunch of "improvements." |
