Hey Folks,

After many years shooting Tupperware i decided to build up a 1911. I'm getting a Rock Island 9mm Tactcal, and i'm trying to figure out what all needs to be done. I need knowledge.

I'm thinking grips.

I'm pretty sure I want a magwell (need recommendations). I know I need good mags (Wilson, right?) And aside from that I don't know what I should do. The Rocks I have shot have been pretty good out of the box, but i haven't shot one all that much.

Recommendations?

I like VZ grips. Sights are always good too. Dawson fiber front sights are great. Trip Cobra, Wilson ETM, or MetalForm 10 round mags are Good. Actually talked with Rob Leatham about 9mm mags tonight and he likes the metalForm mags. Smith Alexander magwells are great as are Dawson and Techwell.

After the grips, why don't you just shoot it a while before deciding what to change?

Just a thought..............

I agree with shoot it for a while before doing anything. When it comes to 1911's I find if they run out of the box ( rock islands have a reputation for doing so) the less you mess with them the better

I'm all for running it out of the box, I just worry about the reload with that tiny 1911 mag well (I'm used to Glocks).

How big of a PITA are sights on a 1911. I like the Novak rear, but i do want a fiber front.

Also is a barrel bushing wrench necessary. The gun has a one piece full length guide rod.

Bushing wrenches are not necessary unless your bushing is super tight, which on a RIA it probably will not be. Ive only owned 1 1911 that the bushing was tight enough to warrant a bushing wrench, even in that case I still have never used a bushing wrench. I pulled the slide off, then pushed the barrel out of lock up and moved the bushing by hand. The first several times the bushing was retarded tight. Its gotten a little easier, but its by far the tightest bushing ive personally seen in a 1911

I prefer Novak style sights. 10-8 rear sight is also great as well. I dislike FO front sights because I have a hard time focusing on the tip of the front sight if it has a fiber optic insert

to see what your 9mm ria needs, Copy the parts list of a STI Spartan in 9mm and add a S&A magwell.

Or Just get a 9mm Spartan.

Get it.
Shoot it.

Don't mod it.

RIAs run just fine out of the box.
