Purchased this recently from a neighbor friend of mine. I paid $600. Can anyone decipher some of the markings for me?

Looks like a very nice Augusta Arsenal rebuild.
1943 Colt frame. As a rebuild, it doesn't likely have all of the original parts, but the slide and frame match, so you're ahead of the norm. Depending on your local market (and pending a decent inspection), I'd call that an $800-$1200 pistol. I would have snatched it up at your price! AA = Augusta Arsenal (where it was rebuilt, likely soon after WWII) GHD = Guy H. Drewry (Inspector for Colt) VP in triangle on left trigger guard is Colt's "Verified Proof" mark... ...just above that is the "Flaming Bomb" inspection mark And on the right side near the rear, the Ordnance Dept. inspection stamp. Also check the barrel for all marks, and the interior of the frame and the top and underside of the slide. Having been built in '43, it very likely saw action in WWII. After the war, it would have been inspected and repaired then returned to service if needed. Looks like it hasn't had too much heavy use since then, though. Congrats! |
| just looked up my old weapons card for the one I was issued Ser. # 1063302 I miss my old 45 Colt: S/N 857,000 to 1,609,529 = 1943 (S/N’s 856,405 to 916,404 were duplicated by Ithaca look for “F.J.A.” Ithaca inspection initials. S/N’s 1,041,405 to 1,096,404 were duplicated by Union Switch & Signal. Look for “RCD” US&S inspection initials |
