I just bought my 1st 1911 and want to get some more magazines. Can anyone tell me what are the best Mags available.
I have done some research so I know about Chip McCormick, MecGar and Wilson Combat. but in that 20-30 dollar range is there any that stand out from the pack?

I don't know about "best" but I have used Wilsons exclusively for years now in a wide variety of 1911s with zero complaints.

I'll be interested to read what everyone else here uses...

What manufacturer is the pistol? If it's a springer then just get more of those. Wilson are always a good choice. Don't waste your money on chip McCormick mags

I have always used Wilson 47Ds but I have recently become enamored with the Tripp Research Cobra mags.

A good number of members realize there is no "best" magazine.  They usually recommend quality magazines and it is important for the OP to check function in his pistol.
In no particular order

Tripp
Checkmate
CMC
Wilson
Metalform

Checkmate and metalform produce the OEM mags for some of pistol manufacturers.
Checkmate 8 round extended tube mags come with Dan Wessons and Rugers.
Checkmate also makes Colt factory mags.

USGI mags for full size 1911s and Colt mags for Officer grip 1911 have always worked for me.

I never thought Chip MckCormick mags were that expensive.  They are around $20 here most of the time.

From my experience Tripp, Wilson, Checkmate, CM in that order.

Keep in mind that you should use one with a captured follower if you have a light weight frame.

If you go to 1911 Forum or M1911 Pistols forum there are numerous threads on this. M1911 has quite a following for the Checkmate magazines with the hybrid feedlips.

Many do not like the Wilson because the follower is all polymer and
will with time wear and not lock the slide back.  Tripp Cobra Mags
solved that problem with their hybrid follower; metal & plastic.

Tripp also makes the Flexfollower that is "no-tilt" and all metal.
Checkmate's follower is like this only coated in black Teflon and with
the dimple. (see above)

Some on those forums feel the springs prematurely weaken with the
Wilson mags. Tripp has some of the strongest mag springs around. Chrome
silicon and ever so slightly larger wire diameter. Wolff offers what is
referred to by those buying and using the Checkmate magazines a an 11#
spring. These can be specified when order Checkmate mags directly from
the factory.

Checkmate makes OEM mags for Colt.

If you run a Springer, the 47d's feed just fine but won't be long before they fail to lock the slide back after the last round.  CMC Powermags are my answer, I have a half dozen 47d's i no longer use.

Two of my 1911s are Springfields and I've never had that problem... BUT, 1911s are strictly range/fun guns for me and they don't see nearly the use that my primaries do, so that may be why that issue hasn't hit me yet.  I'll certainly be looking for it from now on.

I replaced the stock springs in the 47d's with ISMI springs and after a while they don't engage the slide stop either...these were used in my TRP which primary use is USPSA single stack competition.  I'm beginning to think it's the plastic follower

Try Wolff extra power springs those worked for me on my wilsons when they stopped working the slide release/stop.

The OEM Sig mags (Checkmate) work 100% in both my Tac Ops and Springfield 1911's.

Depends. My preferences are: for my 1911's in 45acp I like Wilson Combat mags. For the one in 9mm, I prefer Tripp though it came with Wilsons.

I've got a Kimber aluminum compact that uses shooting stars for no particular reason other than the previous owner used them and they work.

I have a Ruger SR1911 that uses OEM and Checkmate mags (same as OEM but never tried any other.

I used to have a Springfield USGI WWII replica that used USGI $7 mags from CTD (back when I actually bought stuff from them)

Never had a problem with any of them. In fact the only pistol that I've ever had a malfunction with is a Glock 22 with factory ammo and factory mag. Just saying...don't overthink it.

I'd buy one recommended mag for your particular brand of pistol and preferred ammo (search a dedicated forum) shoot the hell out of it and if they work, buy some more.

I've tried all the fancy expensive mags in my custom springfield mil-spec and I still go back to the stock springfield mags.   They just work flawlessly all the time. Simple and cheap.  Got 10 of them for $100.

I use wilson(47',47d's), cmc 10rd & 8rd, mecgar, and cheap usgi style mags for everything. All are flawless in all of my guns...guess im lucky

I have a pool of 8-rd CMC Powermags and Wilson 47Ds I use.   Instead of keeping track of whatever unique mags that came with a particular gun, and how well they work, I just store them in the gun case and use my range mags for everything.

In my experience, if it won't work with a CMC or Wilson, the gun has other problems that need to be addressed.

For what it's worth... I use, recommend, and deliver every 45ACP Government/Commander Model I build with the Wilson 47.

I used to be all about the Wilson47d , but now I prefer the Chip McCormick + mags.

I do the same -- most of my OEM factory mags have never even been taken out of the case, let alone loaded/used.

I've read that the Wilson ETM is supposed to be an upgrade to the 47d, with improved spring life and reduced follower wear.  Anyone know if they are successful in those regards?
I see a lot of folks recommend the 47d, but far fewer name the ETM.  I'm curious as to why that is.
Any experienced ETM owners here?

Same here. The only mags that won't work are those piece of shit KimberPro mags. Virtually everything else I've tried works in my Springfields...Go figure...

I own some ETMs in .40 and 9mm.   They work well and the follower really seems to be locked down a lot better than in other brands where it seems wobbly and inconsistent.

In .45, personally I wouldn't pay the uplift for the ETM when the 47Ds work well enough for me.
