Is this something that any gunsmith with a lathe and crowning tools should be able to do, or does it need to be done by a 1911 smith? Or, I think I might try it on my Operator with a hack saw, hand drill, and some old bits I have laying around*. *just kidding |

I'd like to have it cut flush as well. I'll be watching this thread with interest! |

I am more than qualified to do this kind of work, but currently do not have funding to purchase a lathe, so I am going to do this to one of my 1911's with this tool.
Crowning Tool from Brownells This tool showed up today, but I probably won't get to it for several weeks as the slide is at a local machinist shop being reshaped and cut for Novak sights. |

So no lathe,......do you have a mill? Try that with a drill press, and you WILL end up with a chattered up mess! Some shit needs to be done by a qualified and experienced individual, WITH THE PROPER TOOLS! Why would I use a drill press? It is a HAND tool. You have made up your mind, so you won't believe it, but I am 'qualified' and 'experienced'. This tool will do the job and do it well, when used properly. |

Tons of smart asses in here,........ That tool is for recutting a crown, not flushing a barrel. Do what you like...... I am glad you recognize your role. What is it with A&P's always believing they are the smartest guy in the room? That is a cutting tool, its use is not limited by the description on the package. As to doing what I like, I appreciate your 'permission'. |

What is the obsession with cutting the barrel off like that? It looks ReTARDEd ![]() This. It's a matter of personal taste--kinda like a melt job or a ball-milled slide. Some people love the look, others find it offensive. But the owner of a gun has the right to build it the way he wants it and we should celebrate the diversity! Certainly shouldn't hurt anything if done carefully. And, yes, it can be done with files and hand cutting tools (hell, you might even find a use for that hacksaw if you start with a long enough barrel)...provided the man with the tools has the patience and basic skills to do the job. Think about it for a minute--this ain't rocket surgery. It's just cutting steel. But a lathe does make the job a helluva lot quicker and easier! |
