Just installed one on a Springfield Mil-Spec (Brazil gun from 1996).  I was surprised how much it increased the lockup and tightened the slide to frame,  The gun was pretty loose and I could push the hood of the barrel down more than I care for.  It was shooting inconsistent groups and I was going to get a new barrel fitted and maybe the slide fit, but decided to try this out first.  Has anyone tried these and what were the results?

I've had them in a couple guns, they seem to work well, and I don't recall ever breaking one, one was in an old AMT govt model I used to have, the other was in a Springfield TRP I bought used, the TRP had no need for it, the AMT I had it put in, and the results were like yours.

I would suggest measuring your slide and barrel.
A bushing can be ordered from EGW that fits with very minimal fitting.

If you go this route, most likely you will need a link as well.

If he is trying to replace the group gripper he will need a new link, he said the slop in the barrel hood allowed him to push the barrel down farther than he liked, if he keeps the gripper, he should be ok without replacing the link.

We played around with these back in the '90's and my recommendation would be to pitch it in the ditch and learn to live with the accuracy as-is or have a new barrel fitted.

I had already fitted a new EGW bushing prior to installing the Group Gripper.   I also just installed an EGW HD thumb safety which is pretty nice.  The Group Gripper tightened the gun up, but I will be shooting Saturday and will know if it improved the gun beyond that.  I bought the gun for a good price knowing that I was going to try and install parts over time as a learning experience.  I really thought I would have send the gun off for the barrel fit since that is something I don't want to tackle yet.  The Group Gripper is an experiment to save some money and time.   Sights are next.

I use the group gripper full guide rod on a Colt series 80 and a new auto ordnance 1911 both have natl match chromelined govt barrels and I fit natl match bushings to the barrel...accuracy is excellent groups tightened up about an inch from factory barrels..I love em they work great ive been using them for the last 6 years on the Colt and 4 months on the rebuilt auto ordnance.

The proper fix is a new barrel.
The GG is tensioning the barrel, thus tightening the barrel fitment band,
as the OP stated, tightening the slide to frame fitment.

Ah. The Dwyer group gripper.  That shit was obsolete in 1979.  Properly fitted barrel, bushing and link is the answer you seek.

They break
Always at the most inopportune time.  Like during a man-on-man shootoff at Gunsite.
Wilson shokbuffs also fail at inopportune times.
I purged all my 1911s of thes gimmicks

Guys,
The BEST way to improve mechanical accuracy is to have a properly fitted barrel installed by a knowledgeable gunsmith....along with the associated cost. The Dwyer Group Gripper can improve accuracy, for a minimal cost..... starting at $29.95.

Dwyer Group Gripper

We sell Group Grippers, oversize barrels, offer barrel fitting, and of course  build full house custom 1911's...... something for everyone's budget. YMMV.
