Which one is the best for the buck?  I keep hearing about the following:

  • Desert Eagle 1911G

  • Ruger SR1911

  • STI Spartan

  • Remington R1

If I like the platform, I plan on buying a top tier one, but I'd like to have at least one $600-$700 one in the collection.

Is there anything else I missed?  Something else I should consider? Springfield? Sig?

Out of the choices you gave. i would go with the Ruger.  Remingtons R1 is a nice gun as well though.

Of those...Ruger.

I like STI, but the Spartan is not US made.  I don't like External extractors either, so I'd have to go with the Remmy if it was me.

Have heard nothing but good things about the Desert Eagle.  Fondled one at Cabelas one day, as well as a Citadel.  Desert Eagle build quality seems great, and an awesome trigger.  Don't know when, but my next gun will be a 1911.  Tough for me to choose between a Rock Island 2011 Tactical and the Desert Eagle.

Check out the various 1911 forums for info on all your options.     Like this thread

I have been real happy with my Ruger SR1911. I plan on getting the commander length when prices settle down.

Springfield "Loaded" model is excellent.

Of those choices I like the Ruger. Remy is not bad but I don't care for the factory sights.

I think a Rock Island Armory is the better option, even though it's not on the list- Yes even over the Ruger.

Can't say anything about the DE1911... just haven't read anything about them.

The STI Spartan has a very good rep; I haven't seen one in reality in quite some time.

The Ruger seems to be beloved by its owners, but I've yet to get hands on one.

I do have a Remington R1, and I consider it a fine gun and a good starter 1911. So I guess I'd vote that way. And yes, I've compared them directly to Rock Island Armory 1911s, I'd take the R1 over an RIA all day every day (my R1 worked 100% out of the box, the RIA took a fair amount of tweaking and some decent quality mags to make it run reliably at all).

You have a list of good choices, really hard to go wrong.

Ruger or Spartan.

The R1 I owned had a list of issues and I wouldn't buy another.   The newer ones may be built a little more consistently and correctly, but I'm not about to spend my money to find out.

The Spartan will probably be the most accurate out of that bunch and though made in the P.I., is backed by STI's good service dept.

Agree entirely. The Ruger is prettier, but STI and Armscor have put together a very quality product for the price.

I don't have a ton of exp with 1911s, having only owned a Kimber and a Springfield, but I would add 2 to your equation:

Under $700, a Rock Island Tactical or Railed model is a great buy. $550 average price. Buddy of mine has one that s nearing 3,000 rounds without a malfunction or breakage/stoppage of any kind. The Railed model is next on my handgun list.

Slightly over $700, the SA Loaded model has tons of features, beaver tail, night sights, full length guide rod, match hammer and trigger, bull barrel... Used may be cheaper but new looks like about $800 or so.

FWIW, at $1000 give or take, I'm in love with the Springfield Champion Operator. Fully loaded, aluminum 31oz frame, great finish... Only 150 rounds through it (hey, I've had it for 8 days) but it's been flawless and insanely accurate.

If you get really lucky you might be able to pick up a used Springfield MC Operator around that price. Give or take a few bucks and some luck!

After reading some of the reviews, I almost pulled the trigger on the Desert Eagle, but decided to read more about the customer service offered by Magnum/Kahr.  Since a 1911 isn't a glock or M&P, I was worried about a few of the horror stories I read.

Ruger and be done with it. At 25 yards it makes me look like a better shooter than I really am.

I'd spend less and get more: Norinco.

it is still better quality than the remington and the ruger. don;t get me wrong, they are ok pistols, but lets face it, for that fit and finish, they are sub $400 guns, not $700-800 guns.

Springfield Loaded or Range Officer.

I just know my DE commander model could ring a. 8x12- steel plate at 50 yards off hand about 50% of the time as long as I did my part.  And 25 yards was too easy.

RIA is good. One of my 1911's is a Metro Arms American Classic Commander and I love it. (Philippine mfg also).
Only thing is you should probably consider adding the cost of new grips. (Those guys from the Philippine's have no clue about decent grips) but that's minor if that is what you really want.

Springfield MilSpec or spend a little more and get a Loaded.

I just sold a Springfield Loaded for $700.  I also bought a Range Officer for $700.  Both would be my recommendations.

I REALLY like my new Loaded. After shooting it and getting great groups I was sold on it.  Fit and finish is really great(It's a NM marked one).  .

In your price range I have had a Ruger, STI Spartan. For slightly more I have had a Colt 1991 (two) and Springfield Loaded. Of all of these, I rank them as follows, Colt 1991, Ruger, STI Spartan and Springfield Loaded.

The Colt fed everything and ran smooth.

The Ruger feeds rough but runs good.

The STI Spartan had an excellent trigger and the best barrel fit. It was accurate but the machining and some parts left more to be desired.

The Springfield loaded was the most loose fitted 1911 I ever had and was reflected in it's accuracy. I tried to fit an over sized bushing for it, the over sized bushing still fit loose.
