I am wanting to purchase my first 1911.  I have shot revolvers for 40 years but have only shot autoloaders a few times.  I would like to keep the price reasonable but get a quality firearm.  I guess I am asking what is the best bang for the buck in todays market

Second the Rock Island Armory. Their full-size tactical became my choice for first 1911 purchase, and I'm so happy with it. It shoots just as well as my friend's Springfield, and it was almost half the price. You won't be disappointed with one!

Edit: spelling

Third vote for RIA.  Check out Centerfire systems...

Before this turns into a +1 thread for RIA, do you have a price point in mind OP?
Do you want fixed sights or target sights?
Does country of origin matter to you?

Does anyone know some places with the RIA tactical 5" 45acp in stock at a good price?

This is the order I would select my first 1911 cheapest to pricey:

RIA $400
STI Spartan $600
Springfield range officer $800
STI Trojan $1000
Springfield TRP $1400
Dan Wesson Valor black duty $1600

Or if you really want to do it right

Guncrafter No-Name $2500

Price point is open.  I want the best quality/dollar.
Target sights
Of course I prefer USA made but not absolute.

Springfield Armory Mil-Spec is THE best 1911 for the price. One can also sometimes score a gently used Springfield in a bit higher model for about the same coin.

I would also urge you to at least try to get into the $750-800 range on a 1911 IF you can as you'll get a much, much better gun there, IMO.

Springfield Range Officer.  Mid price, great gun.

Colt or Springfield Armory are the only 2 brands I would consider.

I would start first with the STI Spartan as mentioned above and then move onto the Springfield Range Officer.

This is a list I agree with.   I would also suggest the Colt Combat Elite or the Concealed Carry Government for around $1000.   Ed Brown also makes a helluva gun at the $2500 price point.

As others posted, Springfield Range Officer is a good match.

After discussions with the CFO, I need to keep it under $700.  I looked at the STI Spartan and really like it.  Now if I can just find one.

Wow, it seems the prices of the Spartans have gone up a bit.
You can check out Brazos Custom and ShootersConnection.
They both deal with STI, but it seems their prices are at $725

Might have to up it to $800

Yeah, I checked both of those.  They are holding at full MSRP; I guess that is better than jacking them up higher.

I have to control the price because if I buy something and my wife likes it, I end up having to buy a second one for her.  When she gave me the $700 limit I knew exactly why.

Cabela's had about 3 STI's yesterday. They were all under $700.

Have you considered used? I bought an unfired Remington R1 (US "made", at least US assembled ) in the box with all the goodies for about the price of a RIA.

I ended up buying an STI Trojan 45.  My wife chose a Rock Island Tactical VZ in 10mm.  So much for common reloading.  So glad I have a wife who shoots.

Congrats on the Trojan. I'm an STI junkie and among my stable are two Trojans (.45 & 9mm). Superb pistols and made from scratch in Georgetown, TX. In addition to U.S. made the STI warranty is lifetime on the gun. Terrific company.
