I have a Springfield GI to which i would like to add a tritium front sight. There is enough
meat on the rear sight to widen and deepen the notch, but i don't think there exists a
front low enough to match- at least i haven't found one. Is there one out there, or will i
have to use a high profile rear blade such as on the Mil-spec?

You'll have to go to a higher sight.  The 10-8 or Harrison "retro" sight is an excellent choice.
