I very recently acquired a Colt Combat Elite and would like to change the color of the the frame. I have seen some 1911's with an OD Green frame paired with a blue slide and I really like that look. I would really like to send the frame to Wilson Combat for their coating but stories of year+ wait times scare me. What other options are available? Any recommendations? Thanks.

For the life of me, I have no idea why you'd want to do that to a Combat Elite. It makes me sad.

That said, if you're set on doing it, you could have the frame Cerakoted; it's tougher that Duracoat or just about any other commercially available coating that anyone can apply. Maybe send it to Springfield and have them put a melonite coating on it; that's really tough as well.

What he said. If you want a green gun, buy a Citadel and some Gun Kote and have at it. Don't screw around with a Colt.

I have a 1911 w/ a melonited frame and another 1911 w/ a cerakoted (OD) frame. Both are hard use EDC (rotated) guns.

The cerakote looks really good, but it doesn't wear as nice as the melonite does, IMO.

If you want color, cerakote is the best way to go.

It is really a Colt parkerized frame with a Combat Elite slide, I was going to do the frame silver like it would come from Colt but I figured if I were to go through that, I'd rather have the OD frame than the silver.

How about hard chroming the frame; tough as nails, and it will look more like a real CE.

I agree. Since it is somewhat of a bastardized Colt anyway, (yet I hope it is still all Colt), have the frame finished in a brushed hard chrome for ultimate durability. If you want to go cheap but still get a great finish, Ga Gunsmithing will Cerakote the frame for a very reasonable amount. I bead blasted one of my Combat Elite frames because I didn't like the polished sides. I think it turned out great in the matte gray. Looks like the dull SS on the round surfaces all over now.

The Colt with my Baer which was Cerakoted by Ga Gunsmithing.
