first Ive heard of these. Seems fishy, but they say its legal, and you dont need a serial number on it? Assuming it is legal, how would that work with carrying? |

I did a 80% 1911 build quite along time ago....since then there has been tighter regs on what is actually 80% and/or legal. The frame I built on was stainless and needed the rails cut, the grip bushing holes taped, the ejector pin hole drilled and a little finessing on the frame sides to "pretty" it up and bring the width within specs.
I topped it with a 400 Cor-bon barrel and commander slide from Caspian and used all high end parts from STI(trigger), Wilson(grip safety, mainspring housing), Chip McCormick(hammer and sear) and Ed Brown.(pins, thumb safety, slide release) It never did function 100%...everything worked perfect except the safety never seemed "right" and too many FTF's for my liking. It was my first attempt at a home build...so I imagine, results would have been different now. I have since sold off the top end and Installed a single shot top end....it's a fun range gun and that's about it. If I was to do it again, I would not go the 80% route...it costs more in the long run and is just not worth the headache just to prove to yourself that it can be done. On the plus side, I did learn all the ins and outs of the 1911 platform. Next in line was a CETME/HK hybrid build, followed by a Romy AK build, followed by a AR15 build, (with a few rebuilds on various parts guns in between)....don't ask me why I work in reverse order of difficulty, that's just how things worked out I guess... |

I can't say for all states, but it is legal to build your own gun if it is legal for you to possess one. Since you can never really legally sell it, it doesn't have to have a serial #...if you plan on manufacturing to sell, you'll need a serial # and a License to do that....there is more to it than that, but that is the gist of it. |

I've done it several times. I wouldn't do it again, I'd rather just buy a finished and properly spec'd 1911 frame from someone like Caspian. Too much work that could be spent elsewhere.
Legality: if you are otherwise able to possess a firearm, you are OK to build your own. No SN is necessary unless you wish to transfer it to someone... which the ATF does allow but wants to make damn sure you are not in the habit of doing so. |
