I have a Sig Scorpion 1911 TB I was shooting today. I had some 230g Rainier jacketed round nose target loads i was writing my name with when the last round of an 8 round wilson combat SS mag chambered and BOOM. Round went downrange, spent case stovepiped, follower and spring went shooting out the bottom of the destroying the plastic mgazine floorplate in 20 pieces, follower hit the bench then bounced and and hit my cheekbone. Thank god for safety glasses. I spewed blood for a minute, check to make sure I didnt have anything lodged in my face, then picked up the pieces.  Sig is unharmed, wilson combat mag is repairable wih a new floorplate, I still have both eyes, but it looks like I got punched.

The case had about 40% case head seperation. This leads me to believe there was a fracture or split in the reloaded case that passed my inspection.  The overcharge scenario is not too plausible because I use a slower burning powder load that fills up most of the case capacity. Thus bullet would not have an opportunity to be seated with a double charge. Lesson of the day, just because it is your brass, doesnt always mean it is reloadable. Check and double check.

you can see where pieces of the plastic shrapnel went through the amo box.

the follower is what hit me in the face. Felt like a ball peen hammer.

I call that one a "whew" and a few other terms.
Glad you are safe.

Wow, who would have thought the follower would have enough inertia to bouncing off the bench to feel like a ball peen? Glad you're okay and had your glasses on.

And people say I'm anal for inspecting all my brass with a jeweler's loupe before reloading I've culled alot of brass through the years that looked suspicious under magnification.

better safe than sorry. I have a new magnifiying glass now.

edit :The spring retainer plate between the floorplate and spring (small flatbar object on the table) is what hit me. Not the follower.
