Found some melted lead, in the sludge while I was cleaning up.... It looks like she was exposed to fire at some point. Interesting! Maybe a silly question, but any possibility that the lead could have melted without the round cooking off? I would have thought that anything that would have fired the round would have at least partially racked the slide and the shell casing would have been ejected, or exposed in a jammed position. If the lead melted out of the bullet without it firing, then that may explain why the lead was in the gun (barrel?) and the casing still in the gun. I guess a firing pin mark on the primer would indicate if the round was fired or not.

There is a firing pin mark on the primer.... from what I can tell, the melted lead was inside the frame (possibly between the magazine and the frame, which would explain why it was so hard to remove) |

Back then, I'd guess $25-$30?
Which is around $500 in today's dollars.. Edit - sorry, I meant "new commercial", at that time. Used surplus...not sure what the surplus situation was back then, as the military ended their contracts and I don't imagine they were selling too many? But, I didn't live through that era so I have no idea what was going on back then

I'm old, but not near THAT OLD! What I learned is the college educated types thought that what we call WWI was the "War to end all Wars", and Police officers nation wide trusted revolvers over autoloaders. There sure were lots of 1911s in the movies carried by gangsters though... |

I am not that old either. However, I understand that 1911s were popular with criminals in the 20s and and 30s, possibly because so many were available after that war to end all wars. They were also fairly popular with lawmen, though revolvers were more popular, as they were with criminals. I do believe that auto pistols took a drop in popularity after WWII. Between the War to end all Wars, and WWII, autos seem to have been more popular. Look at how many Savage, Colt, Remington pocket pistols were sold in this era. Of course ballistically, the autos were either ahead of or even with the revolvers for much of this time. I wasn't around back then, but have talked to old timers that were. Yes, the .38/44 and .357 magnum became available in the 30s, and the factory Colt .45 loads were slightly superior to the .45 ACP, and yes, Elmer Keith and others were loading the .44 Special hot, but if you bought and fired factory cartridges during most of the time between the world wars, auto pistols were ahead of the pack, and the .45 ACP was the lead dog of that pack. My father, uncle and next door neighbor were members of the WWII generation. They didn't think as much of the 1911 as I did. Pistols were more highly regarded by the earlier generation, or so it seems. Think of WWI, and fighting in the trenches. The 1911 looks a lot better compared to a Springfield or an Enfield in very close quarters than the 1911 does compared to a Thompson, grease gun, M1 carbine, or even the M1 Garand. Of course, they had the 1897 trench guns in both wars. I am long winded, yes, I realize that. I just wanted to point out that there were plenty of people in the 20s and 30s, (for that matter, in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s), who considered the M1911 and M1911A1 to be fine pistols. My father used to infuriate me by saying that he realized I could shoot a .45 very well, but that the pistol was still inaccurate. Some myths die hard. |

Golden State Arms was picking them up CHEAP according to SAR. I mean like 10 bucks cheap, IIRC. |

I haven't found a magnaflux place that I can take her to yet.... I have some feelers out via some gunnies..
If you know anyone who has access please let me know (I'm in CA, but I don't mind a bit of a road trip... this gun served our country well, she deserves to have her story known) |
